Back in January 2017, Square Enix announced it was working on a game based on Marvel’s Avengers franchise through its Crystal Dynamics studio, a studio notable for developing Tomb Raider. The announcement also came with a teaser video for the game which seemed to suggest the characters in Marvel’s Avengers may be stylized after their counterparts in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe, or at the very least available as DLC.

However, the reports that have been released prior to the E3 2019 show have stated that Marvel’s Avengers will be its own separate story from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, containing all the iconic characters, environments, and iconic story moments that long-time Marvel fans can appreciate and enjoy.

According to sources, Marvel’s Avengers will offer a single and multiplayer gameplay, with up to four players teaming up. Square Enix have also reportedly called this game “the defining Avengers experience”. Reports ahead of the upcoming E3 2019 show have also stated that Marvel’s Avengers will only be the first in what is being described as a “multi-year, multi-game partnership” for Square Enix and Marvel.

These same reports also state that Marvel’s Avengers will feature a universe that gamers can play in for years to come, suggesting that the multitude of games Square Enix and Marvel are planning to release may have ways of intertwining with each other.

Before this, Marvel has never offered a gaming experience that can compare to or rival DC’s Injustice games. Previous Marvel games include Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Marvel vs. Capcorn, and X-Men: Legends.

The most recent games to come from Marvel have been the mobile game Marvel’s Avengers Academy and the 2018 Marvel’s Spider-Man exclusively released on PlayStation 4.

Square Enix’s E3 2019 show will happen on June 18th, 2019.
