The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been maintaining its diversity since the very beginning. Further, with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Marvel Studios purposefully shifted the spotlight towards the Asian American community. Featuring Simu Liu as the first Asian big-screen superhero for the franchise, director Destin Daniel Cretton weighed in on a sequel for Shang-Chi.
After Simu Liu paid tribute to Jackie Chan in the $432M first installment, director Destin Daniel Cretton expressed his desire to cast the martial arts legend in the second installment. Previously speaking with Cinemablend in 2021, Cretton disclosed his dream cast list for the sequel, although the movie got delayed amid uncertain circumstances.

“I still, you know, I watch that back, and I’m like, ‘I still don’t think I’ve mastered it’. It very much is a tribute to Jackie and his action design.”
Explaining further, how the action sequence came together as a result of the action director, Brad Allan’s dedication, who was a pupil of Jackie Chan, Simu Liu admitted the unforgettable fight scene from the Shang-Chi movie was an homage to Chan.
“Brad was a pupil of Jackie’s…So it’s very much an homage. It’s also very much Brad’s own experience and his choreography – in his mind.”

With a Shang-Chi sequel on the way, filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton spoke with Cinemablend, and just dropped the perfect idea regarding the movie’s cast. Revealing his dream to feature the martial arts legend rather than simply paying tribute to him, Cretton expressed his desire to add Chan as a prominent cast member in the upcoming sequel.
“I mean, if we could ever get Jackie [Chan] into a movie that would be a lifelong dream of mine”
Putting that grand idea out into the universe, Destin Daniel Cretton made fans super excited when he almost confirmed his decision by stating, “Yeah. However, currently, there is no news or update about the upcoming sequel of Shang-Chi. Simu Liu has informed the fans about the unpredictable delays in the sequel, due to problematic circumstances.
