The incident in question that involved MCU star Brie Larson dates back to 2017 when she was the award presenter for the Best Actor award that was won by Casey Affleck for his phenomenal performance in the film Manchester By The Sea. Here, while everyone was giving the star a standing ovation, the actress decided to keep her hands firmly by her side. This controversy was later clarified by the star herself when she revealed that she disregarded Affleck for the s*xual misconduct charges that he was facing at the time of his win.

But while this was a very controversial topic at the time, almost a decade back, Kate Winslet also stood up for a similar cause when she straight-up refused to credit her Academy Award win in the Best Actress category to Harvey Weinstein, the man who had funded her 2009 film The Reader through his company. Since the producer was infamous for all the sexual misconduct he had committed during his dark reign over the industry, Winslet straight-up refused to acknowledge him in her acceptance speech. In a past interview, the Titanic star said:

“That was deliberate. That was absolutely deliberate, I remember being told. ‘Make sure you thank Harvey if you win.’ And I remember turning around and saying, ‘No I won’t. No I won’t.’ And it was nothing to do with not being grateful. If people aren’t well-behaved, why would I thank him? The fact that I’m never going to have to deal with Harvey Weinstein again as long as I live is one of the best things that’s ever happened and I’m sure the feeling is universal,”

Therefore, with such an act of defiance against the wrong, she stood her ground, which helped her receive newfound respect from her fans as well as the public.

While the film may look like it’s a general erotic love thriller in the beginning, The Reader turns the story on its head to slap the audience with a twist that shakes the very foundation of the story. In post-war Germany, a sick teenager named Michael Berg gets into a passionate affair with his caretaker, a woman named Hanna who is almost twice her age, which continues till one day, she disappears without a trace. Later, when he attends Law School, he’s in shock to find Hanna defending herself in a war crime trial.
