Robert Downey Jr. and Sarah Jessica Parker met while working on the set of the 1984 film Firstborn. Soon they became the hottest couple in town as they moved in within eight weeks of starting dating. Despite the Dolittle star’s substance addiction, the couple had a great time together, and they were together for years before parting ways in 1991.
Talking about his split during an interview, Downey Jr. shared that his drinking and drug addiction did not “jibe with Sarah Jessica.” He also shared that she tried helping him get over these addictions and would get upset when he was not able to “get [his] act together.”
However, despite all her efforts, he was still not able to come clean, leading the Hocus Pocus star to walk out of his life. During his interview, the Tropic Thunder star shared that he loved Jessica Parker and was heartbroken after their breakup. “I was in love with Sarah Jessica . . . and love clearly was not enough,” he said.
Downey Jr. further mentioned that it was meant to happen, as he moved on to get better, and the Footloose actress found “her home with a great star.” The Avengers star is also happily married to Hollywood producer Susan Levin, whom he credits for changing his outlook on life.
Sarah Jessica Parker Doesn’t Regret Her Relationship With Robert Downey Jr.
Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr. were 18 when they first met and started dating. Considering their age at the time, many also believe that it was their first serious relationship, and the Firstborn actress does not regret a single thing about her relationship with the Due Date star. “I will say I don’t regret any of it. I don’t resent the time spent,” she said during an interview.
She has also shared that her relationship with Downey Jr. has taught her the difference between loving someone and taking care of them. She shared that the relationship made her realize “What’s necessary and what grown-ups should and shouldn’t do for one other.”
Jessica Parker has shared that most of the time she was worried if Downey Jr. was okay and that she was afraid of what might happen once she left. However, there came a point when she couldn’t stand it anymore and decided to leave for good. Sarah Jessica Parker married Matthew Broderick in 1997, and the couple shares three children.
