Director J.A. Bayona revealed that The Rings of Power team considered making the TV series almost connected to Peter Jackson’s trilogy films.
Prime Video’s The Rings of Power is set hundreds of years before the events in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. In his interview with SFX Magazine, Bayona said:
“We all love what Peter Jackson did… and at the very beginning, we thought about establishing some kind of a bridge between the show and the movies. But then, as you realize the complexity of each world, you get invested in your own story. Then, unconsciously, you start to create something that has its own life.”
The Rings Of Power And Its Connection To LOTR
Recently, Peter Jackson mentioned that Amazon Studios promised that they would send him the scripts for The Rings of Power, which actually never happened. The director did not make a fuss about it and said that he is very excited to watch the TV series. It turns out that Amazon Studios decided not to show Jackson the scripts for legal reasons. The show was meant to be separated from the films anyway.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is loosely based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy world which will tell the story of Dark Lord Sauron’s ascendancy to power. The inspiration for the series comes from the vast and long history of the Middle-Earth. Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy movies grossed almost $3 billion worldwide.
Prime Video’s The Rings of Power will be set during Middle-Earth’s Second Age, a time of peace until Sauron rises to power and the rings of power will be forged.
The Rings of Power is a five-season deal and is currently the most expensive project by Amazon Studios with a whopping $465 million budget allocated for its first season alone. The series is expected to arrive on Prime Video this September 2.
