Mel Gibson achieved immense success in the industry as both an actor and a director. But his career received a major setback after his name was embroiled in several controversies. This also led him to lose a potential blockbuster from his career starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The Viking flick was left by the Titanic actor as he didn’t want to associate himself with the controversial director.
It was reported that Leonardo DiCaprio will star in Mel Gibson’s Berserker before the latter’s domestic abuse controversy acted as a major obstacle. It would have undoubtedly resulted in a super collaboration if the project was successful.
How did Mel Gibson lose the opportunity to create his dream Viking tale?
Berserker was supposed to be a massive project for the Braveheart fame. All the plans he made about the movie and the statements showed that it was supposed to be a dark and gritty Viking tale starring one of the biggest Hollywood stars. But unfortunately, the project never saw the light of day as Leonardo DiCaprio wanted his name out of any major controversy.
According to sources close to Shutter Island, the star didn’t hesitate for a moment to deny the Mel Gibson movie- “Not a chance… Leo has earned the right to pick and choose who he works with and Mel Gibson is not one of them.” Berserker was supposed to be a very dark Viking tale. The producer Graham King also revealed it to be a creation involving some of the finest talents from the industry.
“This will be an awe-inspiring story, created with some of the industry’s finest cinematic talent and I am just over the moon to be making this film with Mel, Leo and Bill.”
But as soon as the recorded conversations between Mel Gibson and his girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva were revealed, it was a major knock to his career. The audio recordings created a stir on the internet after Gibson was heard threatening to burn Grigorieva’s house down. Despite not being the first controversy in his career, it put his career to a major halt for almost a decade.
Ultimately, the Mad Max actor made a comeback in both his acting and directing character. His Hacksaw Ridge starring Andrew Garfield in the lead also led him to win two Oscars. It also resulted in several other upcoming projects in the pipeline.
What’s upcoming for Mel Gibson?
Mel Gibson is all set to direct the sequel to his 2004 blockbuster titled The Passion of the Christ titled The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection.
