As fans eagerly reviewed this epic adaptation, the 47-year-old perspective added a new layer of perspective to the conversation.

Back in November speaking with his co-host Dan Wells, Sanderson described the series as moderately average, stating,

“You might expect from my previous episodes talking, I am not as high on it as you are. My end opinion of it was meh. I thought it was fairly mediocre.”

The writer elaborated further, expressing concerns about certain elements, particularly the Harfoots. He felt they were mishandled and not portrayed as he expected, which impacted his overall impression of the series. Further, he explained,

“The big one for me is the Harfoots. The Harfoots, I feel, were just utterly bungled. And my feeling on this is that I can feel what they should have been doing and at least in one draft probably were doing, which is the more light-hearted side of this.”

Sanderson’s assessment sparked discussions among fans and industry insiders, as his reputation for crafting immersive worlds in works like the beloved Mistborn series lends weight to his critique.

How Expensive Was The Lord of the Rings: The Rings Of Power

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was a series that came with a price tag as grand as the epic world it aimed to bring to life. It set the form of the original rings of power that granted the Dark Lord Sauron the power to spread darkness throughout Middle-earth.

The production for this enormous fantasy drama series was mostly set in New Zealand. However, it was revealed last fall that the production had been relocated to the U.K. Amazon reportedly spent approximately $465 million, making it the most expensive TV show of all time.

The staggering cost of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power far exceeded previous estimations, already positioning it as one of the highest-grossing series of all time. This jaw-dropping expense undoubtedly encompassed more than just the production expenses of the first season alone.

The acquisition of the rights to the Tolkien property alone accounted for around $250 million. Additionally, there were numerous startup expenses involved in bringing Middle-earth to life, including the creation of sets, props, and costumes that were utilized throughout the show.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is streaming on Prime Video.
