Baldur’s Gate 3 is easily one of the biggest video game releases of the year, with a PC version that just came out on August 3 and a PS5 version just around the corner. Although it has only been a couple of weeks since the PC version of the game was released, the update patches for it have been nightmarish, with Larian Studios not being able to manage them correctly. After an atrocious mess-up with the game’s hotfix 4 that caused a lot of players issues, Larian Studios is finally switching up its approach to come up with a better way to handle the upcoming update patches.

Larian Apologizes for Problematic Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch
Fortunately, the development teams have swiftly looked into the issues being caused by the update patches for Baldur’s Gate 3, and Larian Studios is grateful for their quick response to the problems that so many players are facing. The developer personally shared the latest update with the game’s community, reassuring the panicked fans that the studio is extensively reevaluating how it will handle patches in the future. This official statement from the developer was essential to keep the confidence of the fanbase after an absolutely terrible hotfix that mainly messed up people’s save files.
In an apology post on X, Larian Studios admitted that all of the save files that have been created after the latest update patch will basically be unloadable until the developer deeply fixes the issues and republishes Hotfix 4. The developer ended the post by apologizing for the “inconvenience” caused by the patch. Check out the official post by Larian Studios below:
It has been reported that on average, players are spending around five hours every day playing Baldur’s Gate 3, which means that the latest problematic update has probably caused a lot of saved data and progress to be deleted.

The Issue With Baldur’s Gate 3 Hotfix 4
The team over at Larian Studios took to the game’s official listing on Stream to explain that the faulty Hotfix 4 patch for Baldur’s Gate 3 was problematic due to a “rare compiler issue.” The developer also admitted to the fact that it’s not an ideal solution to take players back to the previous patch update, Hotfix 3, but it is the only currently available way to properly play the game, calling it “the lesser of two evils.” Larian continued that there was a “rigorous QA [quality assurance] pipeline” that the Hotfix 4 update patch was put through before being given the go-ahead for release.
Furthermore, the developer claimed that it “triggered a rebuild” of the Hotfix 4 patch update for Baldur’s Gate 3 at the “last minute to change the version number.” Larian explained that the latest version of the game was “unfortunately plagued by compiler corruption” that was basically causing all of the reported “crashes” and lost save files. To ensure that issues like these don’t arise in the future, each and every new update will be put through a “comprehensive QA pipeline,” which will be a combination of “a global in-house QA team, automated testing, unit tests, and save-game compatibility testing.”
