Actor Keanu Reeves is well-liked for his modesty, generosity, mysterious on-screen persona, and charitable work. There is, however, an anecdote about a daring motorcycle ride and a thrilling moment of freedom that shows a different side of Reeves. Actress and talk show host Drew Barrymore recalled that on her 16th birthday, Reeves took her on an “irresponsibly fast” ride through the streets of Los Angeles and that it was one of the most memorable experiences of her life.

Drew Barrymore described how Reeves gunned the engine, its roar filling the air with excitement. She climbed on the back immediately, clutching the handles. The ride was thrilling. Barrymore called it “irresponsibly fast,” a phrase that perfectly captured the feeling of freedom and exhilaration she was experiencing at the time.

“I didn’t even think of it as a sweet 16, but I’m now realizing you can’t have a better sweet 16 than being put on your motorcycle and having the moment where you understand what freedom is…[It was] so fast! Like irresponsibly fast.”

At that moment, however fleeting, she grasped the meaning of “free human being.” The ride revived in her the boundless joy and carefree spirit that life’s obligations and the passage of time have a way of burying.

“We drove at the warp speed of my life. We went, and you took me on the ride of my life. And I was so free, I was such a free human being, and it was just this moment where I just remember loving life and being so happy.”

Thinking back on the experience, Drew Barrymore said she values the emotion it brought back very highly. Taking that ride with Reeves was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to let go of routine and enjoy the unbridled thrill of the present.

Barrymore, beaming, said she didn’t think of it as a “typical sweet 16 celebration” at all. It was more meaningful to her than any material gift or fancy celebration.
