James Cameron’s romantic epic 1997 film Titanic, which reimagined the mythology of a notorious oceanic catastrophe through an unforgettable love story, is one of the most recognizable movies of the 1990s. The movie, which was based on the true story of the RMS Titanic’s sinking in 1912, will celebrate its 26th anniversary this year.
The Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet-starring movie received significant honors in addition to its enormous popularity, including being nominated for 14 Academy Awards and winning 11.
Cameron’s masterpiece is frequently brought up in conversation, which has led to the discovery of some more fascinating facts about the saga. For example, in the very famous scene of Jack Dawson sketching Rose DeWitt Bukater, did you know that it was not DiCaprio who drew the portrait of Winslet?
Kate Winslet Revealed Who Actually Drew Her In In Titanic
If you need a reminder, it was the scene in the movie where Rose, played by Kate Winslet, asked her beloved Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) to “draw me like one of your French girls” and she was wearing nothing but a sizable diamond known as ‘Heart of the Ocean’.
Winslet shared the identity of the person who drew her sketch in the film during a 2017 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert:
“No, Jim Cameron actually drew that. Maybe no one even knows that until this moment right now.”
As he worked on the drawing, she even made it clear that she was wearing a bathing suit, and was not n*ked:
“Jim Cameron drew that and he did actually sketch me in a bathing suit.”
According to Winslet, who spoke with Yahoo! Movies U.K. in 2014, she was occasionally asked to sign printed pictures of that scene:
“I don’t sign that one. It feels very uncomfortable. Why would you do that? … They were asking me to sign it. People ask me to sign that one a lot, and actually there’s a photo of it as well that someone’s lifted from a still of the film. That photo gets passed around. It’s like, ‘No, I didn’t mean for it to be a photograph that I would end up seeing 16, 17 years later.”
The actress, 47, further added:
“It is still haunting me.”
This Sketch Scene Also Haunted Kate Winslet’s Children
After its 1997 release, James Cameron‘s Titanic quickly gained worldwide acclaim and captivated audiences. Kate Winslet revealed a few of the movie’s antecodes in earlier interviews.
During the press tour for Avatar: The Way of Water, her latest collaboration with Cameron, the actress disclosed that the n*de scene also troubled her children. Winslet recalled a time when the famous scene was brought up to her by her daughter’s classmate during her earlier appearance on The Graham Norton Show:
“My daughter actually had this at school. It was quite weird. She said someone came up to her having figured out after four years of being in school together that I was her mother. And said [to her], ‘Oh my God, I’ve seen your mom’s b**bs!’”
However, Titanic received praise for its special effects, performances (especially those of Leonardo DiCaprio, Winslet, and Gloria Stuart), production quality, cinematography, direction, story, and emotional complexity.
Winslet’s upcoming project will be The Regime, an HBO miniseries also starring Hugh Grant. Also, she will be reprising her role in the upcoming James Cameron film Avatar 3. The date of release is set for December 19, 2025.
If you have not watched Titanic yet, you can stream it on Netflix.
