Even if you are an Oscar-winning actor who is in high demand in Hollywood, you will not be given access to top-secret Marvel spoilers. When Andrew Garfield appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he told the host that he had to lie to his ex-girlfriend Emma Stone about his well-received performance in the 2021 Tom Holland’s Marvel superhero film. She starred alongside him in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012).
The La La Land actress and Hacksaw Ridge actor played Gwen Stacy and Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man, respectively. In addition to Garfield’s portrayal of his character, viewers adored Marc Webb’s film for the chemistry he displayed with Stone, his ex-girlfriend.
The former couple began dating in 2011 and were together for four years.
Later, they parted ways and moved on; Emma Stone is now married to comedian, writer, and director, Dave McCary.
Andrew Garfield Lied To His Girlfriend About Spider-Man: No Way Home Cameo
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: No Way Home surprised fans by bringing back a number of the most recognizable actors and characters from earlier outings.
With their own variations of the character’s suit, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire reprised their career-defining roles as Spider-Man from different realities. Curiously, however, neither Emma Stone nor Kirsten Dunst returned to play their respective Spider-Man love interests.
Even to those who were closest to them, Garfield and Maguire had to keep the news of their plans to reprise their respective Spider-Man roles a secret before the movies were even released. The Amazing Spider-Man actor admitted in an interview that he had to lie about his involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home, even to his ex-girlfriend Emma Stone.
On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor, 40, made the following recollections in January 2022:
“Emma kept on texting me, and she was like, ‘Are you in this new Spider-Man film?’”. “And, I was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ She was like, ‘Shut up, just tell me.’ I’m like, ‘I honestly don’t know.’ I kept it going, even with her. It was hilarious. Then, she saw it, and she was like, ‘You’re a jerk.’”
Lying Was ‘Weirdly Enjoyable’ For Andrew Garfield
In the wake of Spider-Man: No Way Home’s release, Andrew Garfield has opened up about having to hide his and Tobey Maguire’s appearances in the multiverse from the media. He made the comparison between lying about his involvement in the movie and the game ‘Werewolf’, in which players must figure out which of them has been secretly given the identity of a werewolf.
“It was like this massive game of Werewolf that I was playing with journalists and with people guessing, and it was very fun. There were moments where I was like, ‘God, I hate lying.’ I don’t like to lie and I’m not a good liar, but I kept framing it as a game. And I kept imagining myself purely as a fan of that character, which is not hard to do… I placed myself in that position of, Well, what would I want to know?”
In another interview with TheWrap, the Tick, Tick… Boom! actor admitted that lying about his involvement in the movie was “very fun”, calling the experience “rather stressful but also weirdly enjoyable.” To quote him:
“It was stressful, I’m not gonna lie. It was rather stressful but also weirdly enjoyable.”
Well, critics gave Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man: No Way Home high marks, and it made over $1.9 billion worldwide. It broke several box office records and went on to become the highest-grossing movie of 2021, the sixth-highest-grossing movie of all time, and the highest-grossing Spider-Man movie.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is now available to stream on DIRECTV. Also, The Amazing Spider-Man is available on Disney Plus.
