Jon Bernthal worked with Shia LaBeouf in the 2014 film Fury for the first time. He shared during his interviews that he found the Transformers star brilliant while working on the 2014 film. The duo once again went on to star in the 2019 film The Peanut Butter Falcon after that. The Punisher star shared that LaBeouf’s commitment to his work and his role really impressed him. However, Bernthal was unable to keep in touch with his Fury co-star after he was accused of physical and emotional abuse by his ex-girlfriend.
Two years after he faced the allegations, Bernthal reached out to the Honey Boy star in an effort to be a good friend to him. He invited LaBeouf on his weekly podcast. The Walking Dead actor recalled interviewing Shia LaBeouf during his recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience.
Jon Bernthal Shared His Experience Working With Shia LaBeouf
During his appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, Jon Bernthal shared his experience of working with Shia LaBeouf on Fury. He admitted that at first, he found his actions loud as he “pulled his tooth out,” “cut his face” and “didn’t shower for months.”
However, as he worked with him for eight months, he grew to respect him. The Accountant star shared that he was impressed with his commitment to his work and going on intense levels to prepare himself for his role.
“He was going to risk it all for the work, and I walked away with an enormous amount of respect for him and love for him. I also saw a guy who grew up as a child star.”
Jon Bernthal has worked with some of the best Hollywood actors, including Oscar-winning stars Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, but he believes that Shia LaBeouf is the best actor he has worked with.
Jon Bernthal shared that after Shia LaBeouf was accused of being violent toward his girlfriend, he was unable to keep in touch with him. However, he decided to invite him on his podcast, REAL ONES with Jon Bernthal, after he learned that LaBeouf has been working on him, and was married.
Jon Bernthal Recalls Interviewing Shia LaBeouf
Jon Bernthal shared that when he found out about the allegations against Shia LaBeouf, he was heartbroken. He explained how this was the one thing that led him to lose contact with LaBeouf. He said, “When I heard he’d done those things, and with the sh*t I’ve seen and all the sh*t I’ve done, I can’t be down with you if you put your hands on a woman or a child.”
The Baby Driver actor also shared that when he decided to invite him on his podcast, everyone told him that it was a bad idea. “And everybody in my life is like the worst idea in the world,” Bernthal shared. He said that his intention for inviting Shia LaBeouf to his show was not “exonerating him or saving him,” but he just wanted to check on him as a friend.
The American Gigolo star also talked about the backlash he received for inviting the Fury co-star. He said, “Just the fact that I had him on, I got an enormous amount of backlash for really the first time kind of like a public person kinda hatred.”
However, he still claims that he does not regret having LaBeouf on his podcast. Bernthal shared how after that interview many people reached out to him saying that “I was in that place where I was, whether I was abusive or not abusive, I was getting there.” He claimed that the interview had a positive impact in the way that helped people to reflect on their actions and realize what they were doing wrong.
