It seems as if for a long time Lily-Rose Depp is trying to break into Hollywood. But despite having a famous father like Johnny Depp, it’s proving to be difficult for her. She finally got the chance with the Sam Levinson made and The Weeknd starrer The Idol. But it looks like the project could do more harm than good.
Even before The Idol premiered, it got smeared and showered with allegations of misogyny and sexism. Now, the cable show has premiered its first two episodes at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival and the reports coming out of it are not just discouraging, but also seemingly, quite disgusting.
Lily-Rose Depp Takes A Wrong Step And Gets Smeared In The Idol
In March 2023, Rolling Stone came out with a damning report on The Idol. The report included interviews from the production team and almost all of them unanimously said that the show had drifted far off from the original vision of Amy Seimetz, the original director before Sam Levinson took over. The report read:
“With Seimetz out of the picture, HBO handed the reins to Levinson, only to have him weaken the show’s overarching message, many sources say, by dialing up the disturbing se*ual content and n*dity to match — and even surpass — that of his most successful show, Euphoria.”
In the new Deadline review of the two episodes that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, it seems like those allegations have some inkling of truth to them. The site described a shocking scene where Lily-Rose Depp’s character Jocelyn had s*men on her face. Here’s what the outlet wrote:
“A selfie of Jocelyn with s*men on her face, and its appearance prompts consternation… It’s a bad time for a visit from Jocelyn’s rep at LiveNation (Eli Roth), and he understandably is furious to hear that she has been branded ‘the human c*msock’ on social media.”
Social media platforms have gone haywire after the release of this piece of information. A lot of people have a lot of different views on The Idol’s depiction of s*xuality and n*dity.
Fans Slam The Idol For Its Disturbing Depiction Of Female Stars
People have taken to social media platforms to share what they are feeling after it was revealed that Lily-Rose Depp’s character gets s*men on her face in The Idol. Most fans are mad that this show even got made while others think it’s nothing new from Sam Levinson or The Weeknd.

While the first reviews and reports coming out of the Cannes premiere of The Idol aren’t exactly positive or glorious, we advise viewers to wait for the entire show to drop before passing judgment on it. Deadline too gave a similar opinion, writing:
“Until we know more, it’s hard to make value judgments about morality and ethics, or, more substantively, the arguments about the male gaze and female body rights.”
As for Lily-Rose Depp, the outlet is full of praise for her performance. Deadline reported:
“Depp is quite rivetingly game with, to put it mildly, a highly s*xualized performance that also is grounded and often vulnerable, discomfitingly addressing the fine lines between porn and art, power and exploitation that have faced young women in the music industry for years.”
So it now remains to be seen if The Idol can satirize the underbelly of the music and film industry well or if it will become the very thing it mocks.
The Idol will arrive on 4 June 2023 at HBO Max.
