The Pirates series boasts a staggering $2.6 billion in global box office earnings (excluding the lucrative home video, theme park ventures, and merchandise sales). Estimates indicate that Depp, in his role, secured an impressive sum, ranging between $32 million and $35 million, for his involvement in the fourth installment.
Johnny Depp Did Not Watch The Second And Third Part
Johnny Depp expressed his belief that for the fourth installment, they needed to offer the audience a clean slate, free from the intricate interplay of the previous films. He emphasized the importance of reducing complications as much as possible to create a fresh start.
“I felt if we were going to do a 4, that more than anything we owed the audience a fresh start, without all the complicated mathematics of 1 colliding with 2 and 2 colliding with 3,” Depp said. “I felt like it was important to eliminate as many complications as possible.”
In a conversation with EW, Depp was asked about his thoughts on the second and third parts of the series. The star candidly admitted, “To be perfectly honest, I didn’t see them,” the star said. “I did see the first one. I have not seen the second one or the third one.“
He reflected on how the earlier movies had to construct a trilogy unexpectedly. The storyline was intricate and driven by plot necessity. During the production of the second or third film, he recalls having discussions with Gore Verbinski, the director of the initial three movies.
Disney Hated Johnny Depp’s Portrayal Of Jack Sparrow
Despite the franchise amassing an astounding $4.5 billion in global revenue, Disney remained dissatisfied with Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow. In a 2018 interview with GQ, the 60-year-old actor revealed that the studio was determined to minimize his presence in the series at any expense.
“Disney hated me. They were thinking of every way they could to get rid of me, to fire me.” He added, ‘What’s wrong with his arms?’ ‘Is he drunk?’ ‘Is he mentally f**king stupefied?'”
During a separate interview in 2018 with Rolling Stone, Depp shared the message he had conveyed to Disney some years back. He expressed frustration, questioning the necessity of the complex and distressing subplots in the films. Depp strongly believed that audiences had no interest in witnessing a sorrowful Captain Jack Sparrow.
Enthusiastic fans anticipating Johnny Depp’s return as Jack Sparrow may have to relinquish that dream, as the actor, during his legal dispute with ex-wife Amber Heard, revealed in a report from MailOnline that he won’t be reprising the role for another installment.
