Joel and Ellie Voice Actors Return to Record More The Last of Us Content

Reader, beware; you’re in for a scare. Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, who played Joel and Ellie in Naughty Dog’s 2013 masterpiece The Last of Us, are reprising their roles for Universal Studios Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights this October.

The haunted house, which will be available to visit at the Halloween Horror Nights event from September 1st to November 4th, will allow guests to travel through a scare maze based on The Last of Us, taking place in a dilapidated, post-apocalyptic Pittsburgh. The duo of actors has recorded all-new dialogue that will be heard throughout the experience.

Originally, the plan for a scare maze based on The Last of Us didn’t involve Baker or Johnson. Brand new dialogue for the plot of the haunted house had already been recorded, but other actors had taken the roles of Joel and Ellie. At some point, however, Universal Orlando was able to bring Baker and Johnson onto the project.

Lora Sauls, the Senior Manager of Creative Development and Show Direction at Universal Orlando Resort, spoke about bringing the original voice actors back in an interview for SFX Magazine:

“We got to use the voiceover actors from the video game. We did voiceover recordings with them and they re-recorded our entire dialogue for our haunted house. So we were very, very excited to work with both Troy and Ashley on the re-recording of our haunted house dialogue.”

If the scare maze is anything like The Last of Us or its sequel, or even like its TV adaptation, it should be an incredible experience. Tickets are on sale now for Halloween Horror Nights–that is, if you’re brave enough.

The Last of Us Has Turned Into a Media Empire

Whether it's the next season of the TV series or a spin-off of the game itself, all roads point to The Last of Us Part II as we look ahead to the future of the series.
Whether it’s the next season of the TV series or a spin-off of the game itself, all roads point to The Last of Us Part II as we look ahead to the future of the series.

With two video games, a haunted house, an Emmy-nominated TV show, and even a tabletop role-playing game under its belt, The Last of Us has blossomed into quite the media empire. What could even be next for the franchise in the future?

There is the as-of-yet untitled multiplayer spin-off. A follow-up to the original’s Factions mode, this title has been in development since The Last of Us Part II and was originally intended to be an additional mode for the game. At last year’s Summer Games Fest, creative director Neil Druckmann confirmed that the game would release as a standalone title and be as big as the previous two games in the series.

We haven’t heard much about this mysterious title in the series since then. Time will tell if The Last of Us will wow us once again or if this next installment will fade into the annals of vaporware history. If nothing else, we at least have the TV series, which promises to adapt the games’ storyline through The Last of Us Part II. If you’re fortunate to make it out to Orlando this Autumn, you’ll even be able to experience the series in a whole new way at Halloween Horror Nights.

So what do you think? Are you brave enough to enter the scare maze? Are you excited for the next installment of The Last of Us? Let us know in the comments!
