But, it could be surprising for the readers to know that an incredibly high-voltage accident occurred while shooting was on for a biblical drama back in 2004. It was a Mel Gibson directorial that went on to make $622 million at the box office with a meager budget of $30 million.

Jim Caviezel, best known for The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) and CBS’ Person of Interest (2011), was the lead actor in Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ.

Not one, but Caviezel had to go through two tragic accidents that left him in a traumatic place physically. One of the accidents even led him to undergo open heart surgeries, as reported by Fox News.

Jim Caviezel’s Shocking Accident Left Him Troubled

The 54-year-old Jim Caviezel recently had a conversation with Fox News about the upcoming sequel – The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection that Mel Gibson plans on releasing either in 2024 or 2025, with IMDb sticking to 2024.

The accident, as Caviezel told, was literally shocking as a lightning bolt struck him. The actor recalled that it was during “one of the last” sequences, the Sermon on the Mount, to be specific. 

“I was in shock, then I was on a lot of medication until 2009… was my first surgery at Stanford. My second one was at Cleveland Clinic in 2014. And that saved me.”

He said the whole thing happened in a matter of seconds for him to even move out of the spot. The thunderbolt troubled his cardiovascular system.

Jim Caviezel’s Bloodier Accident For A Scene

The Passion of the Christ was an incredibly challenging film for Jim Caviezel. While the scene with the thunderbolt, which was included in the film, sent him straight to the hospital, another bloodier sequence took him by surprise prior to that.

The cross that fell on Caviezel weighed almost 150 pounds, and he wasn’t ready for that scene. 

“It fell on my head, and I bit through my tongue and my cheek. And it was actually in the film. You see blood streaming out of my mouth. I had really struggled with that all film,” he said.

Besides the heavy makeup, Caviezel actually had bruises beneath his eyes and dislocated his shoulder as he carried the cross to Calvary.
