In 2005 Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda starred in a film titled Monster-in-Law, which made quite the wave at that time. The film did not receive critical acclaim but it caught the audiences fancy. Even today, some of the iconic scenes reappear on the internet often.
One of the scenes which transcended the story of the film is the slapping scene. As entertaining as it was to watch the scene on screen, it was not that easy to shoot. Fonda had to be slapped by Lopez and one of them is still bitter about it.
Jane Fonda is bothered by Jennifer Lopez’s brazen attitude
When Jane Fonda made an appearance on The Drew Barrymore show, Barrymore mentioned the 2005 film, to which Fonda had this to say,
“The thing that comes to mind right away is we have a slapping scene. I slap her, she slaps me. … Well Jennifer — as per Jennifer — she had this enormous diamond ring. And so, when she slapped me one of the times, it cut open across my eye, my eyebrow. She’s never apologized.”
Both the host and Lily Tomlin remained silent as they were unable to judge the situation. Was Fonda joking or her grievances came from a place of hurt and disrespect?
It is very funny, as, in the film, Fonda says in one of the scenes, “You don’t go and slap somebody and then apologize, get some backbone.”
Jennifer Lopez talks about hitting Jane Fonda
In the film, as the title suggests, Monster-in-Law, Jane Fonda plays a devious mother-in-law who moves heaven and hell to ensure that his son does not get married to Charlie Cantilini played by Jennifer Lopez. The iconic slapping scene is when Cantilini shows up in a white gown on the morning of the wedding.
The two women engage in a catfight preceded by the slap. Jennifer Lopez addressed this in 2019 when she was recollecting the memories from the shooting of that scene. She said how terrified she was of hurting Fonda,
“She really really went for it, and so did I, and then I punched her in the eye by mistake — right there — ouch, We talked about how we were going to do this over and over again. I was so afraid to hit Jane Fonda in the face or hurt her in any way,” Lopez said. “She was so brazen and [said] like, ‘Just hit me, don’t worry about it.’ “
She continued,
“I don’t want to hurt you, [and] the next thing you know [Fonda] went for it on one of those slaps. The scene took on a life of its own,” she added. “I just remember afterward Jane had a blood blister right at the top of her eye. My nail, like, went up into her eye. … She didn’t care. She’s such a gangster bitch. I just love her.”
Jennifer Lopez is yet to react to Jane Fonda’s remarks. Will she apologize to the senior actor publicly or will this moment be forgotten? Jennifer Lopez’s reaction will define and decide on those.
