After opening up to mixed reviews, Jennifer Lawrence’s Red Sparrow sparked a major controversy ablaze. From on-screen nudity to graphic scenes of r*pe and torture, the film consisted of multiple elements that became the subject of intense public censure. In light of the same, the movie’s director, Francis Lawrence, was berated for pushing the 32-year-old actress to atrocious boundaries concerning the s*xual and violent nature of the film. But it looks like the audience got affected by it all way more than Lawrence herself because she clearly had “fun” while filming it.
The Controversy Surrounding Red Sparrow (2018)
Adapted from Jason Matthews’ novel of the same name, Francis Lawrence-helmed Red Sparrow stars Jennifer Lawrence as Dominika Egorova, a prima ballerina-turned-spy who gets enmeshed in a Russian Intelligence program to capture a CIA agent. The star cast, besides Lawrence, comprised Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby), Matthias Schoenaerts (A Little Chaos), Jeremy Irons (Lolita), and Charlotte Rampling (The Verdict).
Jennifer Lawrence Had “Fun” Filming Controversial Scenes
“Joel [Edgerton] pretended to be tickled by the skin grafting machine that was peeling his skin off,” she said. “There was blood everywhere and he was like, ‘Hee hee hee hee’, so that was funny. I was basically being tortured with a NERF paddle so it wasn’t that bad.”
The Academy Award-winning actress went through vigorous ballet training, practicing for 4 straight months and dedicating 3 hours each day to prepare for her role as Dominika Egorova. “I am not, as the director says, what you call a ‘homework actress,'” she remarked. “It was miserable, but I think we got enough done that that part of the movie works.”
Red Sparrow is available on Amazon Prime Video.
