Henry Cavill’s departure from the role of Superman left many DC fans shocked. For a long time, people have been campaigning on social media and begging James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, to bring him back as the last son of Krypton. Now, a new rumor has surfaced about the actor possibly returning to the DCU, but not as Superman. Instead, he will be playing the character of Frankenstein on Creature Commandos. However, Gunn caught wind of the widely shared rumor and has now come forth to clarify whether that is actually true or not.
James Gunn Clarifies Henry Cavill’s Position In The DCU
A new rumor making the rounds of social media claims that ex-Superman star Henry Cavill is returning in a new avatar. He will voice the character of Frankenstein in the upcoming animated series, Creature Commandos, and will play him in the live-action version later on. However, James Gunn rubbished the rumor and confirmed that he didn’t even approach Cavill for the role.
The acclaimed director said:
“Completely false. We have our Frankenstein – our first choice – & it’s not Henry. Was never discussed with him.”
Check out his tweet here:
The Creature Commandos animated show is actually the first project that will kickstart the DCU. It will have 7 episodes and as the name says, will feature a team of weird and otherworldly creatures. This includes Weasel, Rick Flag Sr., Bride of Frankenstein, Frankenstein, etc.
What Do DC Fans Think Of James Gunn Debunking The Rumor?
DC fans have mostly been grateful that the co-CEO of DC Studios has often refuted baseless rumors going around about various projects. However, there have been times when Gunn’s insistence on clearing up insane speculations has backfired and resulted in backlash from fans. Strangely, this seems to be another instance of that as fans of Cavill are accusing the Guardians of the Galaxy director of hating the Man of Steel star.
Here’s what the fans are saying:
Cavill’s return to the DCU as Superman is out of the question since James Gunn has stated that DC Studios will cast the character afresh when they begin production on Superman: Legacy. Also, even though Snyderverse fans have been campaigning for Netflix to pick up and continue their corner of the DC universe, that doesn’t seem to be happening as of now.
However, there’s always the possibility that Gunn will hire Cavill and bring him in as another DC character. While that’s not going to be Frankenstein in the Creature Commandos, it can definitely be someone else if the prolific director and actor decide to work together. When or even if that will happen or not remains to be seen.
Superman: Legacy releases on 11 July 2025.
