James Cameron Made Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Co-star Add The Story Of His Miserable Divorce To $379M Film For Laughs

James Cameron has been a fantastic director right from the beginning, and there’s absolutely no doubt about it. His brilliant portrayal of issues that actually persist and matter makes him an even better filmmaker. With movies like True Lies, Titanic, and Avatar, the way open for Cameron seems to be up and above only.

However, while his filmmaking skills are highly applauded, they might be a little intense, judging from the instance where he made Arnold Schwarzenegger’s co-star Tom Arnold add the story of his own miserable divorce in the $379 million movie, True Lies, and that too just for laughs!

Although James Cameron‘s moviemaking skills are highly commendable, judging from the perfect action-comedy ratio in his movies, he sometimes takes it too far which would be hilarious but also slightly discomforting. The same happened on the sets of his $379 million movie, True Lies (1994).

In the film, there’s a scene where Harry Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) tells his friend Albert Gibson AKA Gib (Tom Arnold) that his wife Helen Tasker (Jamie Lee Curtis) is having an affair. To this, Gib tells him the story about his second wife, who took everything including even ice cube trays from the freezer when she left him.

Now here comes the fun part – this scene is actually based on the real-life instances faced by actor Tom Arnold during shooting. Years later, the Arnold Schwarzenegger co-star revealed in an interview about the same, saying,

“In the movie, I said a line, ‘What kind of a sick b**ch takes the ice cube trays out of the freezer?’ I was going through a divorce with Roseanne [Barr] at the time and she did take the ice cube trays out of the freezer in my house. I remember coming to work and telling Arnold and Jim Cameron in makeup about that and Jim said, ‘Say that in the next scene.’”

What’s funnier is that this scene added by James Cameron in the movie actually cracked the audience up. Although personal, it was funny indeed!

Tom Arnold furthermore went on to reveal how his question about who does something like what his ex-wife did is finally answered in the True Lies spin-off TV series based on James Cameron’s movie, which aired earlier this year. Referring to the episode in which it is shown, he said,

“So that was a real thing, and what’s great about [Wednesday night’s episode] is that it answers that question, because she, in this case Sharon, still wants to kill me. I thought it was pretty funny that they connected the two.”

Although the spin-off was slightly under-appreciated as compared to the original movie which received spectacular reviews from fans and critics alike, fans will only have to tune in to the True Lies TV show on fuboTV to find out Sharon’s response to Gib’s question!
