“People go, ‘Oh, my God! Those poor children! They must have gone through so much.’ Says who? They’ve always been with me. They don’t go from pillar to post; they’re not flown here and there with nannies. That’s never happened. My kids don’t go back and forth; none of this 50/50 time with the mums and dads – my children live with me; that is it. That is it!”
These remarks didn’t sit well with the men’s rights group Fathers4Justice, who allegedly targeted the actress, suggesting she was against co-parenting her children with their fathers. They reportedly ran an ad campaign later and used her image for their equal parenting rights ad campaign with the tagline, “Kate, every child deserves their father this Christmas.”
Kate Winslet’s Ex-Husband Sam Mendes Came to Her Support
Kate Winslet shared three children with her three different partners. She welcomed her daughter, Mia Honey Threapleton, with her now ex-husband, Jim Threapleton, on October 12, 2000. The Reader movie star welcomed son Joe Alfie Mendes with her former husband Sam Mendes in 2003, and after her divorce from Mendes, she married Edward Abel Smith, with whom she shared a son Bear Blaze Winslet.
After she made remarks about parenting her children, the Fathers4Justice group attacked her and ran an ad campaign that landed her in the spotlight, and that’s when her former husband Sam Mendes came to her support by voicing his concerns and grievance to the group. As per Independent UK, Mendes told Daily Mirror,
“It is inappropriate for this organisation to involve my family and I when they know nothing of our personal circumstances. Whilst I fully support fathers’ rights, I can happily state this has never been a concern for me or my son.”
Kate Winslet initially met her now-former husband, Sam Mendes, in 2001 when he was looking to cast her in his two directorial projects at the Donmar Warehouse theater in London. The former pair married in 2003 and announced their separation in 2011.
