Robert Downey Jr. has left a permanent mark on the hearts of several fans due to his iconic portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor not only helped the franchise to further rise to fame but also became a crucial figure as his character saved the world from the hands of Josh Brolin’s Thanos.
Given his trademark acting skills in the MCU, there was an impactful scene revolving around the former from 2019’s Avengers: Endgame that took much time to prepare.
An Iconic Scene Crucial for Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man Took A Year to Prepare
While Robert Downey Jr.‘s Iron Man continued to serve among the lead superheroes in the MCU, his last portrayal in the Avengers: Endgame made that picture more iconic. However, there was a scene that was particularly difficult to film which the film directors, Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, popularly known as Russo Brothers shared during an appearance on the Smartless podcast.
The scene being referred to is the funeral of Tony Stark who saved the world in the film by exchanging his life. To honor him, MCU’s greatest heroes who contributed to fighting against Thanos’ army paid tribute to him. That scene was quite challenging as all the heroes were been gathered in a single frame that took a whole year to plan.
“That took a year of planning. We referred to it as the wedding. It took us a year to plan that and get all those people together. We had a couple of months to plan out that shot.”
The directors continued,
“We rehearsed that shot. We scouted that location multiple times.”
This scene was definitely one of the biggest shocks fans received once the film hit the theatres however the directors kept it strictly under wraps.
How Tony Stark’s Funeral Scene Kept Hidden Until Film’s Release?
Given that MCU’s biggest superheroes were collectively present in a single scene, it was quite a surprise that Iron Man’s death was not leaked. It is quite common for scenes to get leaked and especially when a major cast was involved at the time, however, the Russo brothers had an answer to it.
To prevent any leaks of the specially constructed scene, the directors told the cast that they were going to be filming a wedding scene probably of Stark and his love interest, Pepper Potts played by Gwyneth Paltrow. Meanwhile, Paltrow was among the few people who knew about the actual sequence that was going to film at the time.
This is not new as Marvel Studios is known to keep major of their details concealed even to their actors which has been addressed by several MCU stars including Zendaya when she was filming for her Spider-Man series featuring Tom Holland.
The film grossed $2.798 billion worldwide breaking numerous box-office records. It is now available on Disney+ Hotstar.
