A lot goes into making a full-blown movie especially when a superstar of Tom Cruise’s caliber is involved. His recent release, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, came with an adrenaline rush like never before. With the most dangerous stunt of his entire career, Tom Cruise shocked moviegoers with how easily he managed to pull it all off.

However, an action/adventure film is much more than its actors and the stunts they do. A ton of different elements play a huge part in making sure the audience is sitting on the edge of their seats. For example, a good sequence can be turned into a great one with the right sound design and Tom Cruise certainly kept this in mind!

Sound editor James Mather joined IndieWire to discuss the sound design for Mission: Impossible 7 where he recalled how Tom Cruise’s brilliant mind helped create the perfect sound for a fight. In the film, Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and Pom Klementieff’s Paris engaged in an intense alley fight in Venice. When Mather’s team was done with the sound for the scene, Cruise was not so pleased with the result and asked them to make it more “real.”

“You are in it so close to them, it feels like you’re trying to pull ’em apart. And we went to town with that. And then Tom came and listened to it, and he was like, ‘It’s too clean, guys, it’s too specific, like a martial arts movie.’ He wanted it to be dirty and gritty and imperfect because that’s what makes it real.”

Mather, along with re-recording mixer Chris Burdon, got down to business and remastered the tracks. Stripping the scene off some dialogues, breaths, and the actors’ reactions and then building it all up again, the duo was able to create something that accentuated “the sense of scuff and rough edge” in the said scene.

While we are all well aware of the fact that Cruise is a one-of-a-kind celebrity who excels in many niches, little did we know that he has an ear for sound as well. Forget ‘Jack of All Trades,’ Cruise has managed to master them all!

How is Mission: Impossible 7 Doing at the Box Office?

Dead Reckoning Part One was released in theatres on July 12 and went on to debut at $54.7 million in its opening weekend and made a total of $78.5 during the first five days. Currently, the film has managed to make $380.6 million at the worldwide box office.

Cruise’s action-packed installment to the beloved franchise was made on a budget of $291 million. The earnings for the film have been much lower than what was expected perhaps, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie had something to do with this.

Oppenheimer and Barbie were two of the most highly anticipated films of the year and their release dates being just nine days apart from MI7 might’ve caused a setback for the film. In order to make a profit at the box office, Dead Reckoning Part One will need at least $800 million globally. Looking at the way things are going, this mission is going to be pretty tough! Keeping our fingers crossed!
