James DeMonaco is gearing up to helm the sixth installment in the Purge series, which imagines what America might look like if all crime was allowed for an entire day. He described how The Purge 6 would depict a “broken America” in which one state will be picked to purge at a time DeMonaco’s concept for The Purge 6 is based on real incidents; the director credits politicians like Republican Marjorie Tyler Greene with igniting this notion of a broken America.
The Purge series first debuted in 2013, focusing on a family and their house. The Purge: Anarchy expanded the series’ horizons and included Leo Barnes, a fan favorite played by Frank Grillo. With the 2016 release of The Purge: Election Year, the plot continued to develop, incorporating more politics and rebellion. It was anticipated that the series would conclude with The Forever Purge in 2021, but James DeMonaco likely has more to say about the current state of affairs.
The Purge 6 Will Focus on a “nightmarish version” of the United States
The release date for the upcoming horror-action film, The Purge 6, which is still in development, has not yet been announced. All five of the franchise’s prior films have been written by James DeMonaco, who also directed the first three.
The Purge 6‘s director stated in an interview with Collider that the film’s goal is to give the audience a much more “nightmarish version” of American life and its current problems, even though the storyline or actual narrative of the film has not yet been made public.
“‘Purge 6’ is my way of looking at the country now. I grew up watching ‘Logan’s Run’ and ‘Soylent Green’ and John Carpenter and George Romero, whose sociopolitical messaging was within the films. They were smuggling ideas into the film. So for me for 6, I was extrapolating on the discord and taking it to its furthest, as far as you can take that idea of what’s going on, I feel, in the country and the political landscape. And it’s a broken America. “
“[The Purge 6] is about the remapping of America based on ideology, sexuality, and religion, so that the states are broken down. You have your Black state, you have your gay state, and you have your white evangelical state. And it’s really a broken country,” he added.
DeMonaco claims that actor Frank Grillo, who appeared in the second and third movies will reprise his role as former police sergeant Leo Barnes in the sixth installment. Fans can’t wait to watch him battle for his life once more as soon as he returns.
The Purge 6 Is On Hold, Says James DeMonaco
Frank Grillo’s Leo Barnes would make a comeback in The Purge 6, but despite DeMonaco and the star’s excitement to get things going, the studio remains a little worried.
“I wrote the script. Universal has seen it. There are budget concerns, but it definitely presents a fractured America… the America I present in The Purge 6 is where we all are separated by ideology and sexual preference. So, the states are broken down in different ways,” he told The Playlist.
“It’s written, it’s in their hands. I think they’re scared about the budget. But my thing was if I was going to come back and direct a sixth one, it was going to be something bigger and a little more epic in scope, with this new America I want to present and bringing back [Frank Grillo’s] character. So, it’s kinda in limbo.”
To date, the five movies in the series have grossed $535 million at the global box office against a combined budget of just $53 million.
