Isn’t it beautiful to see on-screen couples transform into real ones? What could go wrong between two people who share such impeccable chemistry? Ask Minnie Driver. Hollywood romances are not the fairytale people imagine them to be. There are a lot of issues that can crop up in the course of the relationship and can make the whole affair acrimonious in no time. Driver’s relationship with Matt Damon was no different.
At the top of the world
In the 1990s, Matt Damon was an upshot who had just begun to find his feet in the industry. The Saving Private Ryan star started his run in 1988 with the rom-com Mystic Pizza as a side actor. But fate had other plans for him.
Fast forward 10 years, and Damon would have already won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and would also be nominated for Best Actor for his work in Good Will Hunting. Some achievement, right?
Matt Damon and Minnie Driver’s relationship began to blossom
That wouldn’t be the only reward of starring in Good Will Hunting for Matt Damon. On the set of the movie, the 52-year-old came across Minnie Driver, who was set to play his love interest. Little did anyone know that they would start seeing each other in no time.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, The Milky Way star opened up about her romance with the Oppenheimer star, labeling it as a “sweet” romance. Things were great. Everything seemed perfect. Until one day it wasn’t.
The break-up which left Minnie Driver scarred for life
The couple broke up within a year of dating. That too in some style. Matt Damon, while on The Oprah Winfrey Show, said that he was single. That was how the God on the Rocks star found out that she was single. But her family already saw it coming.
She said,
“They could see that this young man was rocketing really fast and so was I. And when you’re young, it’s pretty hard to keep your head on straight and to maintain a grounded sense of deportment.”
The breakup wasn’t just a sad affair for the 53-year-old but the level of unamicability where she wasn’t even given the privilege to be informed did leave a pang, a wound that took its sweet time to heal.
