Who is Ben Reilly, aka Scarlet Spider?
Scarlet Spider is among some of the most famous Spider-Man variants along with Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen. He has had a long and controversial history in the comics. Introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #149, Ben Reilly was a clone developed by Professor Miles Warren, aka Jackal.
His name is a combination of Peter Parker’s uncle Ben Parker and his Aunt May’s maiden name, Reilly. Jackal created Ben Reilly to seek revenge on Peter Parker, whom he blamed for the death of Gwen Stacy. Despite being the result of Jackal’s ill intentions, Scarlet Spider chooses to become a hero.
The alias Scarlet Spider is also used by other characters in comics, including Kaine Parker, the result of Jackal’s first attempt at cloning Peter Parker. Scarlet Spider has the same powers as Spider-Man, including the Spider-sense. There are also reports claiming that Kaine Parker could also make an appearance in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is set to release on 2 June 2023.
