It's Official: After 5 Years, Red Dead Redemption 2 Player Finally Finds What Happened to Gavin

Red Dead Redemption 2, also known as RDR 2, came out all the way back in 2018 for consoles and the PC version came out a year later in 2019. The game was released as a prequel to the 2010 smash hit, Red Dead Redemption. RDR 2 also did quite well, with the game’s immersive experience and brilliant storyline helping the game top the charts for years. Developed by Rockstar Games, RDR 2 has been the second-best-selling game after Grand Theft Auto 5.

The game also has its share of mysteries, with one peculiar mystery that remains unsolved or rather dividing gamers, even now. The mystery surrounds an NPC named Nigel who is looking for his friend, Gavin. Whether or not the gaming community agrees to put the mystery to bed, remains to be seen.

One of the unsolved mysteries from Red Dead Redemption 2 could finally be put to rest, but only if gamers everywhere could agree on one player’s lucky discovery in the game. RDR 2 players meet an NPC in the game named, Nigel. The character in RDR 2’s official guide is described under the note titled Gavin’s Friend. Nigel becomes available in the game after Chapter 2 and appears in either of the three locations – Rhodes Saloon, Roanoke Ridge, or Saint-Denis.

When players encounter Nigel, he mentions he’s looking for his friend, named Gavin. Nigel goes on to say that Gavin has been missing for years now, so long that Nigel does not even remember his friend’s face. Nigel gives the player three clues while talking about Gavin, with him being a Londoner with a cockney accent, a big bloke, with a sense of humor. Even if one of Nigel’s clues is off the mark, several NPCs fit the bill of the character but none match all three of his descriptions.

According to a Reddit post by a gamer with the id r/DontTurnAround1, a stranger’s corpse found in the game, might just be the missing Gavin. The corpse is found to be of a stranger who is dressed as a gentleman and looks like a big guy but since he’s no longer alive, nobody could say if he ever had a cockney accent. However, since the corpse is dressed very much exactly like Nigel, there is a high possibility of the corpse being Nigel’s long-lost friend.

Going by the official guide for the game, there was a note that mentions if Nigel is looted, players can find a letter with Nigel. Upon reading the letter, it is discovered a certain Tom has written the letter to Nigel, where Tom describes how Nigel and Gavin are both from the same hometown of Berkshire, an English county. Tom goes on to say how he’s proud of both Nigel and Gavin, both having become millionaires in America, which might not be true as Nigel is not a millionaire. This led to many gamers believing the letter was by Nigel himself, and that Gavin may just be an alter-ego of Nigel.

Not all gamers believed this theory since nothing was conclusive. However, with the discovery of a stranger’s corpse who fits the physical description of Gavin as given by Nigel, the unsolved mystery could finally be put to bed, but again only if the gaming community could finally agree to the Redditor’s explanation. Whether or not the mystery is solved after this discovery could never be ascertained as there will always be new fan theories emerging from the game.

Red Dead Redemption 2 currently costs $59.99 across the three platforms, Xbox, PlayStation, and PC with the game selling at a massive discounted price during major sales. Earlier this month, Rockstar announced the original Red Dead Redemption ported to PS4, PS5 (through backward compatibility), and Nintendo Switch, costs $50.
