Academy Award-winning actress Angelina Jolie has proved her worth as an action star apart from featuring in rom-coms. She’s best known for playing the title role in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and other blockbuster movies like Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), Wanted (2008), Salt (2010) and Maleficent (2014).
But before Wanted, she had done her share of action in films like Mr. & Mrs. Smith, so why did she choose to do Timur Bekmambetov’s action flick?
Angelina Jolie thought Wanted had a great story
In an interview with MTV in 2008, Angelina Jolie revealed that she was itching to do something physical because she had done some emotional films and had been at home with the kids. The Gia actress didn’t know anything original until she came across the script of Wanted. She said:
“One, it has a great story. A lot of action movies are kind of lacking in that.”
She then continued:
“It’s got a dark sense of humor and it’s wild, and the stunts — I knew that they were going to be done in an original way. I knew that the Timur Bekmambetov would do this movie in a way that would make it different than any other action movie.”
No doubt, Wanted has really exceptional action script that follows the story of a frustrated office worker who discovers that he is the son of a professional assassin and shares his father’s superhuman killing abilities.
Wanted was Jolie’s first action flick since Mr. & Mrs. Smith, where she played an assassin pretending to be a normal housewife.
Angelina Jolie Did Wanted Because of James McAvoy
Angelina Jolie signed up to work on Wanted when she saw that Scottish actor James McAvoy had been cast as the leading man. She admits that the casting of McAvoy persuaded her to work on the project because she thought he was an “unusual” choice.
“Then I heard they were casting James McAvoy and I thought, ‘That sounds really unusual.’ Everyone thinks of him as this sweet, fun guy – which he is – but he’s also from Scotland, and that’s a tough place.”
The Hollywood star also admits Fox’s character in the film was “interesting” to her as she wasn’t “having fun.” She believed that her character is not easy to be around, and it is much darker [not just like any other typical movie female protagonist].
Wanted is available to watch on Prime Video.
