The Daredevil Showrunner On Netflix Criticizes The MCU’s Reboot Choice

In the ever-evolving world of superhero entertainment, the recent resurgence of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has sparked a range of emotions within fans, from exhilaration to unbelief.

One prominent voice of doubt emerges from an unexpected source, the showrunner behind Netflix’s beloved Daredevil series.

Netflix’s Daredevil showrunner has taken to the digital stage to express passionate disapproval of Marvel Studios and Disney’s decision to reboot the series, featuring the return of Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio.

In May 2022, Disney+ confirmed the production of Daredevil: Born Again, integrating Matt Murdock into the MCU.

The motivation for the showrunner’s critique was a message from Thomas, a self-identified crew member of the Netflix Marvel shows, who claimed, “Not only did they cancel Daredevil once crew got full raise and holiday/vacation pay.”

The showrunner, Steven McKnight, referred to this action, which restored contractual terms to those of the first season, as an old Disney trick. He revealed,

“It’s an old Disney scam where they slightly rename a series to reset contract terms back to the first season.”

He also emphasized the need for guilds and unions to address this issue, providing better benefits for crew members with each subsequent season.

As debates surrounding creative choices intensify, the future of Daredevil and the MCU as a whole hangs in the balance, with this not being the first instance of the reboot facing criticism, as even stuntmen have previously raised concerns about Netflix Daredevil’s reboot.

Netflix Daredevil’s Stuntman Condemns Disney+ Reboot As A Significant Blunder

In another unexpected twist, a seasoned stunt performer associated with Netflix’s critically acclaimed Daredevil series, Chris Brewster, has taken a bold stance by criticizing Disney+ for their decision to reboot the beloved character Daredevil.

Brewster, who served as Charlie Cox’s stunt double in the original series, has voiced his concerns regarding the Disney+ show.

Despite the return of the 40-year-old as Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin, Marvel Studios has emphasized that Disney+’s Born Again will diverge significantly from the original Netflix series, marking something of a soft reboot.

Notably, the Disney+ revival has chosen to forgo several key actors from the Netflix series and has even left out vital crew members, including Chris Brewster himself.

During an appearance on the Ikuzo Unscripted podcast, Brewster openly discussed what he perceives as a major blunder in Disney+’s approach. He said,

“So, nobody that worked on the original series, other than the cast that they’re bringing back, is coming back. And I mean, there were just some truly, truly wonderful that worked on that show and I think they added to the magic of that show. And I think Marvel’s making a big mistake.”

Further, he elaborated on Marvel Studios’ desire to distance Born Again from its Netflix predecessor and emphasized that apart from the returning cast, virtually none of the original series’ contributors, especially prominent crew members, will be involved, a decision he deems a significant error.

This critique adds a layer of complexity to the highly anticipated return of Daredevil, hinting at potential creative disparities and industry-related concerns that have left fans eagerly awaiting more details.

The three seasons of the Netflix adaptation of Daredevil are now streaming on Disney+.
