Sebastian Stan Called Out MCU Boss for Promising Him $1.3B Film Role Before Dropping Him Off in Captain America 3

Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes is easily one of our favorite characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His story has been captivating since his very first appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger. Bucky’s relationship with Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers is one of the top bromances to have graced the MCU.

Apart from his appearances in the Captain America franchise, Sebastian Stan also played Bucky in two Avengers films and the first Black Panther. The actor recalls how casually the role was given to him by Marvel Studios’ President, Kevin Feige who broke the news to him at baggage claim. He then reveals that he has always been handed the role offhandedly, since the very beginning.

Released in 2018, Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther revolutionized the superhero genre. Fans from all over the world were in awe of the film which made $1.3 billion at the box office. Sebastian Stan got to reprise his role as Bucky Barnes in the post-credit scene of the film. However, Stan wasn’t given a very official invite to join the film.

In an interview with Esquire, Stan can be seen reacting to headlines, photos, and memes. In the interview, Stan was shown a headline that read, “Sebastian learned he was going to be in Black Panther while standing at baggage claim with Kevin Feige after a flight, where Feige offhandedly mentioned it.”

Laughing, Stan revealed that it was actually true and that Kevin Feige just casually let him know that he needed to come early the following week to do a scene with Black Panther director, Ryan Coogler. The Pam & Tommy actor also stated that his roles in the MCU have always been handed to him “offhandedly.”

“Completely true. I think it was on the set of Captain America: Civil War, and he goes, ‘Oh yeah, by the way, we’re gonna have you come in early next week. You’re gonna do the scene with Ryan Coogler’. It’s always been like that, by the way. It’s always been off-handed. Even getting the role back in the day was sort of off-handed.”

Stan also talked about how fans always ask him if he is happy with Bucky’s story and whether or not he believes that his character got justice. Stan replied stating that he is happy that the story was able to get Bucky in a good place.

Fans loved the onscreen chemistry between Stan and Anthony Mackie in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Therefore, they are looking forward to hearing any update regarding Stan’s involvement in Captain America 4. As of now, despite a report by Cosmic Circus stating otherwise, the actor has not been confirmed to reprise his role in the film.

However, Stan joked at the D23 Expo about finally breaking free from Mackie hinting that he will not be in Captain America 4. He stated,

“All I can say, freedom tastes bright. Finally, I’m free. No, I love him…it’s weird of course. That’s, you know, it’s a little bit like…Stockholm Syndrome or something. When you’re like, ‘I might not…you know…’ But anyway, it’s nice to at least always be close to each other.”

While a Captain America film might seem a bit odd without the Bucky, Stan has made it quite clear that his MCU future is a bit hazy for now. Talking to ComicBook.com, Stan said,

“I don’t, I really don’t. I haven’t known that for ten plus years, I always am very happy when I get to live another day, hopefully before I get too old. We’ll see, anything is possible.”

Clearly, Stan still has a soft spot for Bucky and would love to play the character a few more times. Right now, Bucky’s fans have Thunderbolts to look forward to where Stan will reprise his role as he fights alongside other supervillains.

Thunderbolts is expected to release on December 20, 2024, and Captain America: Brave New World will release on July 26, 2024.
