"It's a multiverse": MCU Star, Who Went Toe to Toe With Loki, Is Returning to Avengers Franchise After 11 Years?

Talented actor Clark Gregg, who plays the iconic role of Phil Coulson, has recently dropped hints that he may return to the Avengers franchise. Coulson’s return after an 11-year absence following his death in 2012’s The Avengers is possible thanks to the MCU’s exploration of the mind-bending concept of the multiverse.

Phase 1 of the MCU established Phil Coulson as the devoted S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who brought Earth’s mightiest heroes together in the face of extraordinary threats. Unfortunately, his journey was cut short when he was killed by Loki, the God of Mischief, in The Avengers.

Despite this setback, Coulson made an unexpected comeback in the MCU TV show Agents of SHIELD on ABC. Even though the show’s events occurred in a different part of the Marvel universe, Coulson still held viewers’ attention for seven seasons.

Clark Gregg’s portrayal of Coulson won fans over, and they have been eagerly awaiting his return to the larger MCU universe ever since. Gregg talked to The Cosmic Circus at Motor City Comic Con about possibly returning to the role that made him famous.

Gregg said, “there’s always a chance,” when asked if he might reprise his role as Phil Coulson. He went on to talk about the multiverse’s limitless potential and its exciting possibilities for his character’s return.

“There’s always a chance. There’s just always a chance that- I mean, you know, it’s a multiverse.”

In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gregg’s excitement about the expanding MCU was palpable. He thanked Marvel for the opportunity to be a part of their universe and shared his enthusiasm for upcoming films like The Eternals and Shang-Chi in August 2021.

Gregg confirmed that he had heard the speculation that he would reprise his role as Coulson in movies like Secret Invasion, though he was cagey about giving any further details. The anticipation of the fans waiting for official confirmation grew stronger.

Gregg’s intriguing remark to The Cosmic Circus only fueled the fire of fan speculation. His first response to whether the Coulson from The Avengers was a Skrull all along was to say that Marvel had “confirmed” it.

“They’ve confirmed that he was a Skrull all along, haven’t they?”

However, the actor may have confused the Skrull storyline from the final season of Agents of SHIELD, in which Coulson became a Life Model Decoy. Gregg quickly shifted his position after being corrected, saying that Coulson was a “real-life person” who connected with viewers because of his genuineness.

Where and How Phil Coulson Might Return

Clark Gregg’s possible return as Phil Coulson prompts intriguing speculation about the character’s possible reappearance and how it might develop. The series finale of Agents of SHIELD suggested that the show took place in a parallel universe, which would explain why Coulson wasn’t present in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline.

As a result, Gregg’s character could theoretically travel back in time to Earth-616 (or Earth-19999) in the future, which is consistent with his reference to the multiverse. The nature of Coulson’s return, if any, is still up in the air. It could be in his usual guise or a new guise entirely.

With the MCU’s continued growth and exploration of the multiverse, fans are in for a wild ride. Fans excited about Coulson’s possible return to the Avengers franchise can watch Agents of SHIELD on Disney+ and relive his past adventures. The Marvel fandom eagerly awaits whatever comes next, and anything is possible with the multiverse in play.
