Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man sequel saw actor Mickey Rourke play the role of Ivan Vanka aka Whiplash. He had outrageous demands for his character including having his hair in a samurai bun and a bird on his shoulder. That is not the only account of his strange antics, something which has been called out by Shia LaBeouf, albeit slyly.
While talking about the time he himself went off the rails for some time, Shia LaBeouf took a slight jab at Mickey Rourke and his eccentric behavior. He does so by calling out the double standards of the entertainment industry when it comes to treating actors and actresses differently.
Shia LaBeouf Disses Mickey Rourke
In an interview with Variety, Shia Labeouf talked about the downs of his career including being blamed for plagiarism and getting arrested after he interrupted a Broadway performance, drunk. Once, LaBeouf shocked the world when he walked onto the red carpet at the Berlin Film Festival in 2014 wearing a paper bag on his head. The bad read, “I am not famous anymore.”
He told the media outlet that owing to his shenanigans, people around him told him that if he continued, his career would end up facing a major setback. He stated, “People I respected just looked me in the eyes and said, ‘life’s too short for this sh*t.’ I’m still earning my way back.”
LaBeouf realised the after affects of his behaviour while there was still time. He then called out the double standards of Hollywood stating that if he was a woman pulling these stunts off, his career in the industry would be over. In doing so, he took a sly dig at Robert Downey Jr’s co-star, Mickey Rourke.
“It’s a double standard, for sure. Women require grace for longevity. I don’t think men require grace. You can be Mickey Rourke.”
Apart from his work in films like Immortals, Sin City, and The Commmando, Rourke is known for his eccentric personality and thanks to the actor’s antics, LaBeouf couldn’t chosen a better example for proving his point.
Mickey Rourke’s Antics & an Unpopular Opinion On Tom Cruise
From his boxing career to a plastic surgery gone wrong, Rourke was an absolute heartthrob in the 1980s. Unfortunately the actor went through a series of questionable decisions that made his fans wonder, ‘Why?’
These antics include the time when he unapologetically hit on Jessica Biel when the two showed up for an interview on The Graham Norton Show. Not to forget the plastic surgery he got which is still considered one of the worst in Hollywood to date. On top of that, Rourke even got himself into a lawsuit with Tupac Shakur and Donald Trump when the former President of USA tried to sue both artists. These are just a few things which set Rourke apart from other actors.
The actor also made headlines just last year when he blasted Tom Cruise and called him “irrelevant” which, let’s be honest, is far from the truth.
Appearing on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Rourke was asked about the biggest movie of 2022, Top Gun: Maverick. He stated,
“That doesn’t mean sh*t to me. [Tom Cruise has] been doing the same part for 35 effing years. I got no respect for that…I think he’s irrelevant.”
Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick made almost $1.5 billion at the box office and he’s still continuing to produce critically acclaimed films like the recent Mission: Impossible 7. For now, the superstar is anything but relevant!
