Tony Gilroy wrote or co-wrote the first three films in The Bourne franchise and has also directed the fourth installment in the series. The issues between the actor and screenwriter seem to have started during the third installment. During an interview with GQ, Damon shared that Gilroy made a deal to write only one drafted for The Bourne Ultimatum.

The actor criticized the studio, saying that it’s their fault “for putting themselves in that position.” He shared that the script Gilroy wrote was “unreadable.” And although he stated that he doesn’t blame him for “taking a boatload of money and handing in what he handed in,” he still said that it could have been a “career ender” for him.

“This is a career-ender. I mean, I could put this thing up on eBay, and it would be game over for that dude,” he said as he called the script terrible. Damon blames the writer for doing nothing and simply taking the money and leaving after providing them with a terrible and embarrassing script.
