Quentin Tarantino is one name in Hollywood who is known for wacky and stylized narratives that are character-driven, propelling the film in entertaining ways and delivering a solidly auteurist work. Witty dialogues, creative visuals, unique characters, and wacky narratives constitute a Tarantino film. One of his most iconic films is Pulp Fiction (1994) where three intertwining characters and their parallel storylines are shown in a nonchronological manner. One of the fan-favorite characters of the film is played by Tim Roth called, Pumpkin. In an interview, Tarantino reveals how Tim Roth was not the first choice for the role, at least for the producer of the film.
The Producer Wanted a High Profile Name for the Role of Pumpkin
In a recent 2 Bears 1 Cave podcast interview, Quentin Tarantino talked about the casting process for Pulp Fiction and how there was a huge list of names that were circulated and discussed for various roles in the film. He potentially got almost all the actors that he wanted for each specific role, except for one. He and his producer argued about the role of Pumpkin and the actor who should play him. His producer Mike Medavoy wanted Johnny Depp for the role, owing to his immense popularity at the time, but Tarantino envisioned Tim Roth for the role.
When asked by Tarantino about whether getting a huge star like Johnny Depp for a comparatively smaller role in the film would bring in audiences and more box office returns, the producer simply replied “It won’t add a dime, but it would make me feel better”. Needless to say, Tarantino realized the producer’s greed and short-sightedness and fought hard to keep his vision intact.
Quentin Tarantino Fought Hard for His Vision of the Film
Quentin Tarantino’s dismissal of studio rules and their overindulgence in film production is reflected since his early days as a director. He is constantly fighting for what he wants for a film and who he wants for each specific role. Tarantino is one of those maverick directors that do not submit to the demands and reservations of the studio system or individuals of a higher power. Instead, studios approach him to make movies for them in order to uplift their reputation and standing with respect to other studios.
What is Quentin Tarantino Working on Now?
Quentin Tarantino has two projects coming up. He will be working on an untitled eight-episode TV series for which details are kept under wraps. He will also be directing his tenth film called The Movie Critic which will be supposedly his last feature film.
