“It was pretty terrifying”: Emma Watson’s Harry Potter Crush Was Surprised by Ralph Fiennes’ Improvization That Made it to Final Cut

Emma Watson’s Harry Potter Crush Was Surprised by Ralph Fiennes' Improvization That Made it to Final Cut

Harry Potter is one of the most iconic and beloved franchises of all time. Growing into something so much bigger than the books and the film, the series has become an entity of its own. The series also had an odd mixture of some of the most talented and experienced actors in British cinema like Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter, Gary Oldman, and Emma Thompson, who were working with fairly new and inexperienced actors like Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint.

This seemed to have worked in the favor of these young actors as they learned a lot about the profession from these legends. One such instance was when Ralph Fiennes, who played the character of Voldemort, surprised Tom Felton while they were doing a scene together.

Ralph Fiennes Caught Tom Felton Off Guard While Filming Harry Potter

Tom Felton, who is best known for playing the fan-favorite character of Draco Malfoy, once revealed something interesting that happened to him while he was filming the final Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows- Part 2. The actor revealed that while he was filming a crucial scene for his character with Ralph Fiennes, he was surprised by some improvisation done by Fiennes when he hugged him.

“It was pretty terrifying to be honest with you. That wasn’t in the script… we did that take like 25 times, he only hugged me once. It was a one-off thing that he just threw at me. I was standing there like ‘What the hell is he doing? Why is he hugging me in this weird fashion?’ It was very strange; it was a surprise for me.”

The hug was not scripted, as Felton revealed in this interview, and did not appear in any of the other twenty-five times that the cast had shot the scene so the entire gesture was quite odd. Felton said so himself, stating that he felt quite confused, questioning why the actor why hugging him in such an odd fashion but went along with it anyway.

What Scene In Harry Potter Is Tom Felton Talking About?

The scene in question takes place during the film battle of the franchise when Ralph Fiennes’ character asks Draco Malfoy to come and join his army and Felton’s character reluctantly steps towards him with tears in his eyes. Voldemort praised Draco for this, oddly embracing him into an awkward hug for everyone around them.

While this may not seem as relevant and may even look weird to some, it is quite an important moment for both characters. It showed the fear that Draco carried towards the Dark Lord and was somehow both uncharacteristic and in character for Voldemort, also showcasing the power he holds and how he uses it to toy with the people around him
