Actress Sasha Calle played the role of Supergirl in the film The Flash. Ezra Miller’s starrer was the thirteenth installment of the DC extended universe films, focussing on the story of The Flash. The film was directed by Andy Muschietti and produced by Warner Bros. It was the first film released by DC Studios under the supervision of co-CEO James Gunn. Actress Sasha Calle was among the leading actors and was well-prepared even before her role was assigned.
As per the reports, Calle was asked to chop off her hair after her first audition. Without knowing what role she would be assigned, the actress proved her dedication to the role by doing as asked by the director.
Sasha Calle chopped her hair even before she was offered Supergirl in The Flash
On Swift Horses actress Sasha Calle shared in an interview with the New York Times about the time she auditioned for the film The Flash. The actress recalled she was asked to cut her hair. Despite not knowing the character given to her, she went ahead and chopped them off.
The actress recalled in the interview that director Andy Muschietti saw toughness and vulnerability in her audition tape for the film. Hence, he asked her to get a haircut without telling her it was for Supergirl. She recalled,
“It was an untitled Warner Bros film. Dude, it was one tape. And then after that, Andy called me, and he was like, can you cut your hair? Still didn’t know what it was. I was like, I’ll cut my hair. And then I signed my contract with Warner Bros. without knowing who I was playing.”
Supergirl’s cropped hairstyle in The Flash is a refreshing change from the radical long blonde hairstyle from the comic book and previous films. The character was earlier played by Helen Slater in 1984’s Supergirl and Melissa Benoist in the Supergirl CW Network show.
Sasha Calle’s Supergirl look was inspired by Injustice’s Lara Lane-Kent
Creator Tom Taylor praised Calle’s look and compared her conceptual designs to his Supergirl artwork,
“In 2014, [Bruno Redondo] and I created a new Supergirl, Lara Lane-Kent, in Injustice, and Sasha Calle as [Supergirl] in the upcoming film, The Flash, is uncanny.”
Sasha Calle’s character, Kara Zor-El, is different from the previous ones as her costume looks similar to Henry Cavill’s version. Although she is Kara, her costume seems to be inspired by a non-Kara version of the Girl of Steel. It was similar to Injustice’s Lara Kent, the daughter of Superman and Lois Lane.
Sasha Calle’s Supergirl was earlier set to be a prominent character in the DC Universe until her fate changed in The Flash‘s third act reshoots. DC Studios apparently plans to reboot the character with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Calle wishes to remain in the role. She has reportedly met with James Gunn about her character’s future.
Ezra Miller’s The Flash is available for streaming on Max.
