Jennifer Lawrence’s Statement On Female-Led Action Movies
Jennifer Lawrence was under fire after she made a statement on female-led action movies during a conversation with Viola Davis on Variety’s Actors on Actors. Talking about the latter’s work in The Woman King, the X-Men star stated that before The Hunger Games, no one cast a woman as the lead of an action movie.
“I remember when I was doing Hunger Games, nobody had ever put a woman in the lead of an action movie because it wouldn’t work.”
People did not agree with her claim, as there have been plenty of action movies before The Hunger Games that featured female leads. Films like Charlie’s Angels, Resident Evil, and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are among some of the most popular female-led action movies.
While many believed that the film series did lead to an increase in female-led action movies, her claim to be the first actress to portray the lead in an action movie was not appreciated. The Passengers actress later clarified her statement during an interview with The Hollywood Reported.
Jennifer Lawrence Clarified Her Controversial Comment
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jennifer Lawrence clarified what she earlier said about female-led action movies in Hollywood. Her statement caused a backlash as netizens claimed that the Red Sparrow star did not consider the work of many prominent actresses who delivered incredible performances on-screen before her.
Explaining what she really meant to say in her statement, Lawrence admitted that she was not the only woman to lead an action film. “I know that I am not the only woman who has ever led an action film,” she said. The actress further explained, “What I meant to emphasize was how good it feels.”
Lawrence shared that she did not mean it the way it came out and called it her blunder. She said, “But it was my blunder, and it came out wrong. I had nerves talking to a living legend.” The Causeway actress also shared that she felt the need to clarify the statement and make things right.
