Despite being one of the most celebrated stars of the last decade, Jennifer Lawrence went through her fair share of lows, which eventually pushed the actress to take a brief hiatus from the realm of acting. Although she made a name for herself from movies like Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, and Red Sparrow, Lawrence did find herself amid backlash after 2017’s Mother!
After starring in four Hunger Games films, followed by a plethora of other critically acclaimed projects, the actor decided to collaborate with her then-boyfriend Darren Aronofsky. However, her passion project’s failure would take a toll on the actress.

Bad reviews for Mother! broke Jennifer Lawrence’s heart
Reflecting on 2017’s Mother! that was directed by her then-boyfriend Darren Aronofsky, Jennifer Lawrence explained the movie’s failure had a serious impact on the actress. Considering the wild, allegorical psychological thriller struggled on its release, the mixed critical reception for the movie took a huge toll on the actress, as the negative comments about the film broke her heart. She explained,
“I read Twitter, and I was looking for bad mother! things. It was horrible. It was really bad. I loved this so much, and it just broke my heart, especially for Darren because he loved this [character]. And any time you’re in a relationship, their pain is your pain.”
Although the movie wasn’t bashed by everyone and a big chunk of her fans loved the film, it didn’t perform well at the box office and was nowhere near Lawrence’s other major projects.
Jennifer Lawrence was emotionally overwhelmed while making Mother!
According to Darren Aronofsky, Jennifer Lawrence was completely immersed in her role in the psychological thriller but it went a little extreme. While filming the horror, at one point Lawrence was so emotionally overwhelmed, Aronofsky explained she lose control. As a result, she tore her diaphragm and even dislocated a rib as she violently hyperventilated during the filming of that scene. Aronofsky explained,
“I wasn’t pushing Jennifer on that day, if anything I was pulling her back to remember that we were just making a movie… I don’t work well with method actors, I work best with actors who basically when you say ‘cut’ it’s over and the emotion is gone and when I say ‘action’ they’re able to go deep into it.
Considering the amount of dedication she put into this movie, it’s reasonable to see why the criticisms and the hate against the film left the actress in a state of disturbance.
Mother! is available to stream on Apple TV.
