Sam Raimi released the first-ever live-action Spider-Man film in 2002 and introduced to the adventurous and thrilling world of the web slingers. The movie was a massive commercial and critical success, which led to the creation of its franchises. In the film, Spider-man comic fans were amazed by the action and fight sequences of the lead Peter Parker and the villains of the film. The romance between Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst was loved by the fans, and Spider-man’s upside-down kiss became iconic.
There were numerous other scenes in the film which has made it a classic film and hold a special place in the hearts of the fans. One of them worth mentioning is the scene when Mary Jane slips while holding her food tray and Peter Parker not only saves her but also balanced all items in the tray.
The Tray Catch Scene in Spider-Man Took Tobey Maguire 156 Takes
As per the plot of the film. one day Peter Parker realized that he did not need glasses anymore. He realizes that he had gained strength and his vision has also improved. In the scene, he was casually sitting at the cafeteria and eating alone. Mary Jane walked past him and suddenly slipped; Peter quickly stood up to catch her with one hand and her lunch with the other.
The most impressive part of the scene is how he catches the food with the tray. MJ, played by Kirsten Dunst, seemed highly impressed by his excellent reflexes. The most interesting fact about the scene is that it was achieved with no CGI effect.
In the DVD commentary of Spider-Man, the head of the VFX team, John Dykstra shared that there were no special effects involved in Peter catching the food. It was Tobey Maguire’s work, and the actor perfected the scene in only 156 takes.

Kirsten Dunst also confirmed the fact and added that team used sticky glue so that Tobey Maguire’s hand would stick to the tray and could catch the items easily. She said,
“Of course, things like the jello and the sandwich were glued to their plates, so all Tobey had to do was catch them all, which is obviously easier said than done. Surprisingly, Sony wanted to cut the scene, but changed their mind after Raimi insisted on keeping it, as it required a 16 hour-day of shooting.”
Eventually, Peter catching MJ’s lunch tray became one of the most popular scenes from Spider-Man, and be remembered in superhero history as one truly iconic move by Tobey Maguire.
