Pedro Pascal’s character Joel’s fate in The Last of Us Part 2

In an interview with Variety, the host asked the star about the happenings in season 2 of the show, particularly about the lead character Joel. As per the game from which the show has been adapted, Joel is brutally killed in the second season. The show has been closely following the plot of the game, hence there are chances of the fateful death of the character. However, in the first season itself, there were some tweaks here and there in the show. Hence there is a giant question about how closely the series will follow the plot of the second part of the game.

As per The Last of Us Part II, there is the introduction of a new character named Abby, who is looking for Joel. When she finds him, she blows off his legs using a shotgun and hits his head with a golf club. In the rest of the game, Elle is seen tracking down Abbey to seek revenge and kills everyone in her way.

If we go by the plot of the game, Pedro Pascal’s character will be killed off at the start of the second season. However, owing to the massive popularity of the actor, the show makers may seek changes in the plot to avoid killing the protagonist.

Pedro Pascal opens up on Joel’s future in The Last of Us Season 2

The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic drama television series on HBO, created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. It is based on the 2013’s video game developed by Naughty Dog. The show follows the life of Joel, a smuggler who has to safely escort an immune teenager, Ellie (played by (Bella Ramsey), across a post-apocalyptic version of the United States. Joel is played by actor Pedro Pascal and his acting was widely appreciated in season one of the series.

However, if the show follows the storyline of part 2 of the game, Joel’s character might be killed. Owing to the large fan following of the actor, it will be disappointing for them. Talking about the situation with Variety, Pascal shared that he is not aware of the completed execution but shared that changing the story for keeping around a character may hurt the show. However, he also said that there is scope for some liberties.

He said,

“I think Part II has more leeway. I think it seemed to me, as far as the people that I talked to, that it’s a different immersive experience. While there are things that have to happen for the central narrative to occur, it seems like it’s a little bit more open. So, that means I don’t… fu**ing know how they’re going to do it. […] Maybe they’re gonna do it, maybe they’re not gonna do it!”

Pascal was asked whether he would be sad if his character is killed off early in the season. He said that he wouldn’t, if it is done perfectly.

The Last of Us 2 may premiere in 2025.
