Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe says alcoholism runs in his family
Daniel Radcliffe has always been outspoken about his alcoholism and how he overcame it. The actor shared that he had started drinking when he was doing the Harry Potter part 6. However, he worked on himself and was sober by 2010. Talking about his alcohol addiction, Radcliffe shared that he feels alcoholism runs in his family. He shared with Independent,
“I will always be fascinated and frustrated by the question of: is this something that would have happened anyway or was this to do with ‘Potter’? I will never know. It runs in my family, generations back. Definitely not my mum and dad, I hasten to add.”
The actor added that the uncertainty about what will happen after the Harry Potter series ended, caused panic and contributed to inclination toward alcoholism.
The actor shared,
“A lot of drinking that happened towards the end of Potter and for a little bit after it finished, it was panic, a little bit not knowing what to do next — not being comfortable enough in who I was to remain sober.”
Harry Potter franchise came to an end with the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in 2011.
Ben Affleck reveals his father was an alcoholic
Good Will Hunting star Ben Affleck is one of the most demanded actors in the industry. Like Daniel Radcliffe, the DCEU’s Batman has also been open about his alcoholism. Talking about his father, he said that didn’t know that his father was an alcoholic. He told US Magazine in 2012 that he recalled his dad drinking a lot. He shared,
“He, you know, drank all day, every day, and to his credit, he got sober ultimately.”
Ben Affleck also has a long history of alcoholism. He decided to stop drinking in 1997, as he shared with Fox News,
“I just wanted to stop. I started regretting some things I did when I was drunk. It’s funny to be obnoxious or out of control, but then it’s like, ‘I think I hurt that person’s feelings, ‘I made a fool of myself’ or ‘I didn’t want to kiss that girl.’ I have almost no inhibitions, so it’s dangerous for me.”
Affleck said in February 2020,
“It took me a long time to fundamentally, deeply, without a hint of doubt, admit to myself that I am an alcoholic. The next drink will not be different.”
Affleck had a few relapses in 2001, 2018, and 2021. However, he is proud of his progress over the years.
