John Goodman, with films like The Big Lebowski (1998), Argo (2012), and 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) to his credit, came off as incredibly creepy to his co-star who went on to work with Barbie actor Margot Robbie in 2020’s Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey as Huntress.
A long-time Disney asset and Legend Award holder, Goodman has famously voiced James P. Sullivan in 2001’s Monsters Inc. and 2013’s Monsters University. His other notable works include The Jungle Book 2 (2003), Cars (2006), and Dreamworks’ Bee Movie in 2007.
In and out of animated and live-action films, and a big fat experience under his hat, he scared off co-star Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the $110 million movie, she said in an interview once with HeyUGuys.
For the aforementioned film – 10 Cloverfield Lane, Goodman played a paranoid character Howard who had a scary alter-ego. The role saw him in a completely different avatar and Winstead found him “intimidating and creepy.”
John Goodman Creeped Out Mary Elizabeth Winstead
Capturing Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Michelle and keeping her in a bunker for the sci-fi thriller, Goodman displayed acting skills that she had never seen before from the veteran actor.
She noted Goodman’s 1988 sitcom Roseanne wherein he played Dan Conner and said that she grew up watching him in all the feel-good comedy films.
“He is that lovable John Goodman that we all know. A legend, but in this role, he gets to be somebody else entirely. So it was a bit surreal, getting to watch this actor, whom I love so dearly, be intimidating and creepy. But he does it so well,” she said.
She further claimed that getting trapped inside a bunker with Goodman and co-star John Gallagher Jr. was an unforgettable experience.
John Goodman On 10 Cloverfield Lane Preparation
The preparation for Howard, according to Goodman, wasn’t something that demanded too much from him, he said to Flickering Myth. He didn’t brag about his smooth transition into a mentally tormented character and gave the credits to the script instead.
“I just came off another movie that I shot in Louisiana right before this and I went right into it. With the script the way it was, I didn’t need to do any prep work. It was right there. I mean, I could lie to you and say I dug my own grave and laid in it for two weeks before filming.”
Although audiences believed that John Goodman nailed a sinister role, he said in a Slash Film interview during the promotion, that the character didn’t have a wide range and was easy to get into.
10 Cloverfield Lane is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
