The unexpected death of Mamma Mia!‘s Donna Sheridan in its 2018 sequel, played by 21-time Academy Award nominee Meryl Streep, shocked fans.
However, recent news claims that Streep is eager to reprise her role again for the potential sequel of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, even though her character is no longer there. This is certainly a treat for the fans, who now can’t wait for their favorite leading lady to make a comeback.
Her performance as Sheridan in the first Mamma Mia! movie was nothing short of extraordinary. The character she created was enthralling because of her charisma, talent, and the soul she put into it. The 2018 sequel by Ol Parker also starred Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, and Dominic Cooper in significant roles.
Meryl Streep Is Eager To Reprise Her Role In Mamma Mia! 3
Ten years after the 2008 original, Meryl Streep’s character Donna Sheridan was revealed to be dead in the 2018 sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
The narrative began with her passing, with her daughter Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried) attempting to reopen the Hotel Villa Donna in memory of her late mother. She gained more insight into Donna’s past as she traveled, including flashbacks of a young Donna (played by Lily James).
Note that Streep made a cameo at the end of Ol Parker’s film, despite her limited screen time.
The Academy Award-winning actress and a few of her Mamma Mia! co-stars spoke about their thoughts on a third Mamma Mia! movie in a recently published Vogue article:
“I’m up for anything. I’ll have to schedule a knee scoping before we film, but if there’s an idea that excites me, I’m totally there.”
Judy Craymer, the co-producer, acknowledged that she was “chastised on social media for killing off Meryl”, but she assured that she did not do it on purpose:
“She [Streep] was hesitant about doing another film because she doesn’t typically do sequels. But I know she loved coming back to film her scenes for Here We Go Again. She felt the love around her and the joy of reuniting with those people, so I think that made her more open to the prospect of a third.”
Meryl Streep’s Excellent Idea for Mamma Mia 3
Meryl Streep has previously come up with some ideas for how Donna might appear in a subsequent installment. She admitted this during the same interview:
“I told Judy if she could figure out a way to reincarnate Donna, I’m into that. Or it could be like in one of those soap operas where Donna comes back and reveals it was really her twin sister that died.”
The honorable actress also made light of the possibility that the third movie might end up being renamed “Grand-Mamma Mia!”:
“We may have to call it Grand-Mamma Mia! by the time we make it!”
Her co-star Dominic Cooper mentioned that Streep was disappointed that she was no longer involved in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again:
“Meryl was definitely bummed about not being in much of the second one. She understood that was where the story goes, but I remember her saying, ‘Well, I didn’t wanna be dead’.”
Judy Craymer also hinted that she had always “pictured Mamma Mia as a trilogy” when asked if Mamma Mia 3 would be made.
Meanwhile, according to Chief Marketing Officer for Universal Pictures, Michael Moses:
“We’re all just waiting to hear from Judy and Gary on what the idea would be. It felt impossible to sequel-ize the first movie but they did it extremely successfully, so we already know there’s an audience for it. There’s definitely enthusiasm at the studio about doing Mamma Three-a, as we like to call it around here.”
The 2018 movie was a box office hit, earning $402 million globally, and it received generally favorable reviews. Mamma Mia! (2008) earned $611 million worldwide on a $52 million budget and was the fifth-highest-grossing movie of that year.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is streaming on FuboTV, while Mamma Mia! can be rented on Apple TV.
