Wanda Maximoff actor Elizabeth Olsen, just around the release of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War in 2018 spoke to Elle Magazine about a variety of things going on in her life. The major thing that seemed to be bothering her was Marvel’s decision to pick the costume for her.
Appearing in five films in the interconnected universe and headlining her own show, WandaVision on Disney+, she said that these heroes hold great iconic value to the fans and they should be represented in a way that justifies the comic book character.
But, when looking around, Olsen never found any other actress donning a costume revealing a cle*vage. Olsen’s character has been shown to take down Vision in a scene from Captain America: Civil War (2016) and also disarmed Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.
Elizabeth Olsen Had Issues With Costume Cle*vage
The original Marvel’s The Avengers roster, if we look at it, consisted of only Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson, as a female core member.
Being introduced at a later stage in the films, Elizabeth Olsen had many other co-stars, like Evangeline Lilly’s Wasp, Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, and Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers. Their costumes weren’t as revealing.
Speaking to Elle, Olsen said –
“It’s funny because sometimes I look around and I’m just like, ‘Wow, I’m the only one who has cle*vage,’ and that’s a constant joke.”
Although she grew out of the rookie costume from Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and it received makeovers in consecutive films, she felt they didn’t evolve her character that much, from a cle*vage point of view.
Elizabeth Olsen Elaborated More On The Costume Design
Quoting Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie and Johansson’s shiny black costume, Olsen felt a little out of place. She felt that she wasn’t being listened to as Marvel’s costume designers retained the cle*vage in her red and black power suit.
Further explaining to Elle, she said –
“It would just not be a cle*vage corset. I like corsets, but I’d like it to be higher. Everyone has these things that cover them, Tessa Thompson does, and Scarlett does. I would like to cover up a bit.”
As it turned out, in her most recent appearance in Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness last year, the studios listened and covered her up to the neck.
As per ScreenRant, her return after the events of Doctor Strange’s sequel seems less likely. We can’t say if her costume was one of the reasons.
Olsen’s His Three Daughters was just released on September 9.
