Daniel Craig has become one of the biggest stars in Hollywood with the role of the international spy James Bond. The actor took up the role with Casino Royale in 2006 and went on to play the role for four more installments. The actor announced his exit from the role after No Time to Die, release in 2021. All his Bond movies have done exceptionally well at the box office, but there is one which is considered his worst Bond film to date.
The film was written as a perfect sequel to the prior story, however, it failed in the execution. There were several reasons which led to its poor on-screen performance despite a massive budget of $240 million.
Daniel Craig’s worst Bond movie
Released in 2008, Daniel Craig’s Quantum of Solace did not turn out to be as successful as expected. It was the shortest Bond film, which ran for only 105 minutes, but maintained its tonality from the previous one. However, the film was unable to live up to the success of the previous film, due to the poor acting of the villain. There was a visible lack of chemistry between the lead actors, Daniel Craig and Eva Green.
The story was very sharp and served as the perfect sequel to the previous film. However, the most interesting part of the script was that it was submitted just two hours before the writer’s strike began. The film may have done average business in theatres but received the biggest opening weekend ever for Bond movies. It made $70.4 million in its premiere weekend. The gross collection of the film was $591 million worldwide, against a massive budget of $240 million.
James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli is proud of Quantum of Solace
The film Quantum of Solace could not even match the numbers for the film released two years earlier. However, film producer Barbara Broccoli is quite proud of her movie. She shared in conversation with Jack Giroux,
“I’m really proud of the movie. I think it’s part of the whole evolution of Bond […] I think the story of that film is that revenge is an empty challenge. You don’t get any benefit from revenge. So I think it’s important in the whole history of the evolution of this character.”
However, Daniel Craig, the lead actor, was not too fond of the film. He shared in an interview with Indie Wire,
“Then I started to understand them, the weight of it sort of bore down. The trouble with [‘Quantum of Solace’], it was a bit of a shit-show, to say the least, the full weight of it was there I kind of think that made me probably lock up. Thankfully, for me, it’s been about loosening it and loosening it and trying to get back to that feeling of ‘Casino,’ which was ‘It’s James Bond, come on, enjoy yourself. Let’s have a good time.’”
In the film, Daniel Craig was on a mission to avenge the death of his lover and double agent, Vesper Lynd, played by Eva Green.
Quantum of Solace is available for streaming on Max.
