Kate Winslet’s career has been tied with many directors in her life. From James Cameron to Harvey Weinstein, she has worked with both the good and the bad. As a result, she has turned out as a fine actress who now stands up for what is right and does not stay quiet when she sees something wrong. However, that was not the case early on in her career.
Out of the many directors she has worked with, Weinstein held a special disgraced place in her heart. The hatred she shares for the director is one which perhaps the entire world reciprocates. Although, it went on to fuel for so long that the actress even chose to remove him from her Oscar speech because he was a big reason why she would not have got it.
Kate Winslet’s Movie Was Almost Shut By Harvey Weinstein
Kate Winslet‘s first Oscar came for her 2009 movie The Reader. The film skyrocketed to fame and Winslet finally got an award she rightfully deserved. Her speech had various actors and important people in her life who she mentioned with a great amount of love; but not Harvey Weinstein. Her hatred for the director reached its limit when she made the film.
“We still had a full four days of shooting of very key scenes that for me — as a person playing that part — were absolutely crucial to the story and to Stephen Daldry, they were as well,” Winslet added. “And Harvey just decided, ‘OK, we’re done. No more money. I’m pulling the plug.’ We had to stop and were sent home. That was it.”
Weinstein had apparently shut off production for the movie only four days before filming was to end. Even though the last few days of filming were really important to her, he did not seem to care and did only what he wanted to do. He did it for the sake of the business and Winslet detested his very attitude and presence, confirming that she would never work with him again.
Harvey Weinstein Never Let Kate Winslet Forget Her Past
Harvey Weinstein believed that he had power over where Kate Winslet’s career would go. Even though the actress had a massive career, her first movie involved the disgraced director. Due to this connection, he always thought of her as if she was an inferior woman standing in his presence.
“For my whole career, Harvey Weinstein, whenever I’ve bumped into him, he’d grab my arm and say, ‘Don’t forget who gave you your first movie.’ Like I owe him everything. Then later, with ‘The Reader,’ same thing, ‘I’m gonna get you that Oscar nomination, I’m gonna get you a win, I’m gonna win for you.’”
He would always guilt her about the same and acted as if she owed him something for a movie that had the majority of the work done by Peter Jackson. Although Heavenly Creatures had a huge impact on her career, Weinstein had no right to act the way that he did. He even attempted to take credit for work she had done, stating that when she would get an Oscar, it would be his doing.
