MCU and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning star Hayley Atwell has risen to prominence after her MCU role as Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger. Atwell has appeared in a handful of movies and of course, in the Marvel series Marvel’s Agent Carter.
While talking about her past earlier, Atwell revealed that her twenties were not particularly happy as the actor was depressed. The actor spoke about her condition multiple times to different outlets earlier.
Hayley Atwell’s Contradictory Statement of Her Past
Hayley Atwell was candid about revealing what it was like in her twenties. The actor told in a 2017 The Times interview that her past was pretty rough and bumpy. “Throughout my twenties, there were periods of depression,” she told the outlet. Even earlier, at the time of making Saul Dibb’s 2008 movie The Duchess, the actor told Evening Standard in 2013 about her mental health condition. “I’m dead, I’m so depressed,” she said at the time.
However, talking to The Independent’s Jessie Thompson, the actor contradicted her earlier statement. “Oh God. Did I?” she asked when the journalist reminded her previous interview.
“I don’t think, for me, my experience of my twenties was particularly different internally from the average person just trying to make their way in the world and figuring out who they are. The difference, obviously, is there are pockets of time where I just had more public scrutiny.”
Although two different takes on her past are inherently confusing, the actor seemed to move on, if at all she had any serious traumatic past. The actor is now focusing on her career more than anything.
Hayley Atwell’s New Take on Her Past
Atwell further revealed that her past statement was pickled in the mix and twisted a bit by the media while she was more particular about it. “I think if I’ve learnt anything it’s that what I say in the public eye carries a bit more weight to it,” Atwell said. So just to be more mindful about “the kinds of things I say, so they don’t become generalized statements that try to capture a whole period of time in my life,” she added.
“I had an incredible decade in my twenties, I traveled the world, I met idols, I played the [National Theatre] Olivier stage by the time I was 24, I was nominated for an Olivier award in my twenties. I’d met people who would go on to become my mentors, like David Oyelowo and Emma Thompson, I was able to be part of juries and give back to members of my own community by mentoring younger students. There’s so much when I look back; I realize I just covered so much ground in my twenties that set a foundation for the work ethic I have later on in my life.”
Given her recent statement, Atwell had a full life in her twenties. In fact, she cherished the memories well revealing specific details of her life at the time. So, it is face to assume that Atwell was not quite depressed and had everything she has dreamed of.
Atwell will reprise her role as Grace in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, scheduled for release on 28 June 2024.
