Inviting a military expert to scrutinize war movies often leads to the unearthing of numerous technical inaccuracies within the battle sequences. This very scenario unfolded when an expert specializing in tanks analyzed the iconic film Rambo III, starring Sylvester Stallone, as part of the Insider series How Real is It?
Nicholas Moran, an esteemed armor officer and historian specializing in military vehicles lauds certain war movies that skillfully incorporate tanks, with notable examples including the critically acclaimed Fury featuring Brad Pitt and the recently released All Quiet on the Western Front (2022). However, Moran reserves his highest accolade, a flawless rating, for the acclaimed TV series Band of Brothers, lauded for its exceptional realism in portraying wartime events.
Military Expert Finds Flaw In Sylvester Stallone’s Film
As expected, it comes as no surprise that action-packed movies like Rambo III (1988) may not prioritize accuracy as much as war films that place emphasis on emotional depth and realism instead of pure tension and thrills. During the scene analysis, Moran observes Sylvester Stallone’s character Rambo, piloting a tank, engaging in a high-stakes encounter against a heavily armed gunship helicopter, which he aptly describes as essentially resembling a “flying tank.”
Moran raises significant doubts about Rambo’s capacity to simultaneously operate both the tank and serve as an anti-aircraft gunner, questioning the plausibility of such a scenario. Additionally, he expresses skepticism regarding the helicopter pilot’s decision-making skills.
Despite being equipped with missiles, the pilot inexplicably opts to launch unguided rockets at the front of Rambo’s tank. Moran does not hold back in his criticism, bluntly remarking that the pilot meets a fate befitting their own foolishness. “It has a tank, so I’ll give it a one,” Moran says.
Given their nature, it is not particularly surprising to discover that the Rambo movies do not strive for a high level of accuracy or realism when depicting actual war scenarios.
