In the past four decades, actor Jim Carrey has established himself as a legendary actor known for his comedy movies. Coming from the world of stand-up comedy, Carrey became a household name in the 1990s, thanks to his performances in movies like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber.
Today, we don’t see Carrey as often on the big screen, but that’s because the actor feels like he is done with the industry. Roughly 20 years ago, Carrey tried to predict his future, stating that he looks up to Tom Hanks, who has been through a similar phase. In this interview from 2001, Carrey revealed that he gets very intimidated by the idea of growing old.
Jim Carrey was afraid of growing old
Aging is inevitable, but that’s a hard pill to swallow for actor Jim Carrey. Back when the actor was 39, he appeared in an interview with FilmThreat and explained that he gets intimidated by the idea of growing old, adding that he admires how actor Tom Hanks handled it,
“I hope I can be brave about aging and dignified about it because so much of this business is trying to hang on to something rather than be who you are. I think Tom Hanks has done that really well. He’s not afraid to take roles that are mature and I’m not going to be either if people allow me to do it. If they enjoy seeing it then I’ll do it. I want to do certain things in certain ways. I want the camera to come in and see the wrinkle and see whatever. I want that to be okay. Because if it isn’t I’ll become a real phony.”
It seems like Carrey was successfully able to predict his future as he handled it pretty well and gave some iconic performances in his 40s and 50s. Carrey’s last two performances were as Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik in 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog and its 2022 sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Is Jim Carrey done with acting?
After 40 years in the industry, Carrey now feels that he is done. In April 2022, he announced that he was considering retirement. In an interview with Access Hollywood, the actor said,
“I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.” When asked if he would ever come back, he replied, “It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”
Carrey’s magnetic charisma, cheerful energy, and playful humor made him a beloved figure in both the comedy and drama genres. Today, he is a Hollywood legend whose legacy inspires the young generation of Hollywood.
