Zendaya opens up on why it was too hard to flirt with Timothee Chalamet
Describing the $122 million worth project as a “war epic action movie,” Villeneuve emphasized that the heart of the story revolves around the relationship between Chani and Paul. He emphasized the importance of capturing the “spark” between the characters, asserting that without it, there would be no movie. He said, “The epicenter of the story is this relationship. If we don’t have that onscreen, there’s no movie.”
However, despite acknowledging the importance of the relationship within the story, Zendaya revealed that it wasn’t easy to romance Timothee Chalamet. She shared,
“It was funny trying to figure out in this futuristic space talk, like, how do they flirt? What does that look like for a space warrior and the young Duke of a planet? How do they show that they like each other? What does that even sound like? Awkward and uncomfortable — there’s all those things. I was like, Does Chani get awkward? Does that happen to her? Does she know what that feels like?”
Apart from this, Zendaya also spoke about her Dune character’s fierce warrior spirit and strong opinions on the world they inhabit, including its politics, religions, and the impact of colonization on their culture. However, despite Chani’s resolute demeanor, she finds herself drawn to Paul, as Denis Villeneuve explained, revealing that the young man manages to touch her heart.

Challenges encountered while capturing the romance between Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya
The filmmakers faced the challenge of capturing the romantic “spark” between the characters within a limited timeframe. Filming during the magical period known as “magic hour,” just after sunset, presented both opportunities and pressure. Zendaya described it as a ticking timer, but the advantage was that they had the chance to revisit the scenes over several days, allowing them to refine their approach and generate fresh ideas each time.
“There’s kind of, like, a ticking timer. Every time we revisited it, we kind of got to sleep on it and think about it, and come up with a new set of ideas.”
In addition to the compelling central romance, Dune: Part Two introduces a host of new characters portrayed by talented actors such as Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and Léa Seydoux, further enriching the expansive Dune universe. Eagerly anticipated by fans, Dune: Part Two is scheduled for release on November 3, 2023.
